Publisher's summary

A lavish, debauched weekend to celebrate an upcoming wedding devolves into a murder scene.

With the snow falling fast on a New Hampshire mansion, seven 20-somethings gather for a weekend that will change their lives irrevocably. The extravagant trip to celebrate Will and Jessica's upcoming nuptials brings together a cast of characters who know each other from Ivy League schools and childhood Upper East Side haunts.

There is Lulu, an LA-based Instagram influencer; Maxie, a former Park Avenue princess, now Midwestern housewife; Yael, an ER doctor from Ohio; Rob, a colorless Wall Street trader; Will, a morality-obsessed lawyer; Jessica, Will’s perfectionist bride-to-be; and Alex Sable, a lawless pleasure-seeker with refined tastes. Alex, son of a billionaire hedge-fund scion, was the sole witness against his classmate in a serial rape trial 15 years ago, the notoriety of which follows Alex everywhere.

By Will and Jessica's wedding day, four months later, Alex Sable would be dead—in that same house, in a bathtub filled with his blood.

Can Tyler Carroll, a well-known podcast reporter determined to pry his way into their closed-door world, sift through the secrets that connect the seven in a web? As Tyler attempts to find the truth behind the months leading up to Alex Sable's dramatic death, he follows the bridal party, whose lives have spiraled in wildly different directions, bringing them to a fateful night.

The narration by Elizabeth Evans pushes the tangled tale forward as she gracefully performs multiple characters, creating a clear picture of chaos and emotion.

Told in dual time lines, the months leading up to the wedding and the investigation thereafter, I Eat Men Like Air is a riveting look at the unraveling of a friend group punctured by violence and a chilling depiction of the rage that festers when it's kept secret.

Note: I Eat Men Like Air contains mature and sensitive themes.

Could not stop listening!!

A first-person glimpse into a glamorous world that will keep you listening, because you HAVE to know what happens to these characters! I fell in love with all of them, and especially with the carefully constructed mystery, which was the perfect pay off to the story. Highly recommend!

A Sharp, Well-Written Mystery

Rarely have I listened to a book so consistently; this was worth every minute of fourteen hours. Not only did I need to know what was going to happen, and how things would resolve themselves, but I was completely drawn in by the characters, who are beautifully three-dimensional, tragic, funny, and, most of all, real. After the book was over, I found myself still thinking about Lulu, Maxie, Will, Yael, Rob, and Alex; I wanted to continue to interact with them. Beyond that, the narration is very well-executed, and the writing is astounding. A strong debut novel.

Characters You Come to Love; A Satisfying Ending

This was a sharply-drawn story. I wanted to hate the characters at first, but I really came to feel sorry for them; by the end of the story, I had so much sympathy for these women, who are so beautifully written that I felt they were real. It just shows you that it doesn't matter how much money you have: women still are treated badly. Well-written, compelling, with intense character depth, many twists, and a satisfying ending. Most of all, the plot moves extremely quickly, because the reader is constantly shifting the narrator every few minutes.

Incredible read from Alice Berman!

I'm completely in love with Alice Berman's "I Eat Men Like Air" and want to listen to it over and over again! This audiobook, read by the lovely and enthralling Elizabeth Evans, is a fast-paced page turner that gets you involved in the action immediately. Alice Berman does an incredible job creating a compelling cast of characters - from Alex to Lulu to Maxie to Jessica to Will (and others) - and equips her characters with flaws, insights, and complexities. The way Alice writes her characters makes you feel like you know this cast intimately well and are right there with them in this mystery thriller. "I Eat Men Like Air" kept me guessing until the end. Fans of Southern Gothic literature and Agatha Christie mysteries will love "I Eat Men Like Air." I highly recommend Alice Berman's "I Eat Men Like Air" and give it five stars!

Could not stop listening -- ADDICTIVE!

This book should come with a warning, because it will fully take up two days of your life, the way a new Netflix show does. I couldn't stop listening to it, and I loved every minute - I was staying in the car to hear what would happen next! It's funny, it's dark, it's everything you would want from a mystery; it never slows down. It reminded me of "The Politician" meets "Succession." The author nailed the world it's set in to the tiniest detail, and she's incredibly talented at keeping you on your toes, dying to know what's going to happen, while going deep on each character. I can't wait for her next book!

A thoughtful guilty pleasure

This book is a perfect balance. It’s a Gossip Girl and Cruel Intentions mystery and a peek into the world of the elite. But it’s also a pretty thoughtful dissection of privilege and intersectionality. At its core, it’s a #metoo story fueled by somewhat unexpected girl power.

Very engaging with excellent narration. I listen to a ton of books. This is top five this year.

Enthralling mystery, couldn’t stop listening

This is one of the most “can’t stop listening” books I’ve ever listened to. Loved the mystery aspect, and the characters really made the story. Riveting story of millennials in 2019.

5 hours too long

This book was unnecessarily long and in my opinion terrible. This story was nothing like I imagined from the description. I hated every character, none of them had any redeeming qualities.

I just finished and I want to listen again!

This story was AMAZING. I kept rewinding to listen to all of the moments when the characters were really thinking about things and figuring stuff out. I am not from this world at all, but I really related to these people and their problems. There is mystery, tension, suspense, but there's also romance, love, sadness, tragedy. I am probably going to start it again from the beginning, because it was so good.
