Publisher's summary

A fallen hero. A jilted lass. A game of treachery they may not survive.

The day Elena MacLeod’s arrow pierced Rolland MacKay’s arse, she fell in love with the ruggedly handsome Scot, despite her better judgment. After all, he was known as the Highland Heartbreaker. Given that, it should have come as no surprise when he disappeared without a trace the day before they were to be wed. But she had become a hopeless fool for the warrior and was devastated. Four years later, when the Highlander resurfaces just as mysteriously as he vanished, Elena is thrilled…until it’s clear the rogue doesn’t deserve her unwavering devotion. Disgraced once more, she vows she’d rather be bitten by a venomous snake than see the dastardly man ever again. But when someone tries to kill her and her impatient father orders her to finally wed, she’s horrified to discover that the man she once adored is the very one to see her safely to her new betrothed—his cousin.

No amount of years could erase the memory of the frustrating, fascinating Elena MacLeod from Rolland MacKay’s mind. Though he’s a hardened warrior taught to have no use for soft emotion, the beguiling creature once tempted him to let her into his head and heart. But whatever life they might have had together has been lost to the world of secrets and lies he must dwell in for the unforeseeable future. Engulfed in the never-ending struggle for the Scottish throne, Rolland has lost nearly everything and is determined to solve the mystery that set him on this path. When he’s unexpectedly tasked with seeing Elena safely to his cousin so they can wed, Rolland soon discovers that to reclaim his reputation and his home, the feisty lass he’s trying to keep his distance from may be his greatest ally.

Thrown together on a perilous journey through the Scottish Highlands, Elena and Rolland will learn that true love is more than the first blush of desire. It’s a weapon to be wielded and can save them, if only they surrender to it heart and soul.

Excellent Story BUT…

Way too short. The plot had all the feels, action, intrigue, angst, super swoon inducing hero, strong minded heroine, even 2 lovesick side characters to make for a superb addition to the MacLeod series but it just wrapped up way too quickly. The mystery was solved, punishments rendered, justice served, a battle won, implied virginity lost, and a HEA all within the last 45 minutes! It could’ve/should’ve taken each of those plot lines a couple of chapters each instead of feeling like the author had bumped back her deadline one too many times.

I would’ve asked for my credit back if not for Tim Campbell’s narration. I have missed his brilliance and just purchased 3 more of his narrated historical romances. I’m pretty sure I own them all now.

Loved it, but…

Too short! Roland is my new favorite highland husband. He is absolutely swoon worthy! Loved how the couple came together without too much angst. Narrator, Tim Campbell is the best! His voice is so very sexy! I’m disappointed that the story was a bit short but worth a credit! Loved this series!!!!

Julie and Tim great Highland story!

Elena Macleod was betrothed to Rolland MacKay (the Highland Heartbreaker). She waited four years after she fell in love with Rolland to show up. He disapeared the day before their wedding. Rolland comes back years later, they have to make a perilous journey through the Scottish Highlands!
Don't mess with a Highland Lass who was scorned. Can true love blossom after all these years?
Rolland has his hands full. Julie writes fantastic stories. Tim brings every story to life with his Highland accent, you feel like you are there.

Loved it, but it was too short

I love Roland. He is my new favorite, but I needed more of him. The book ended too soon. There was more story there that got summarized into a quick ending.

Julie is one of the great story teller’s!!

I would listen to anything that Timothy Campbell narrates (have listened to dozens of his narrations). Julie writes great stories and Timothy brings them to life. I’m never disappointed. This story of Rolland and Elena kept me captivated and touched my heart. ThnxQ Julie and Timothy…

Quite an entertaining story

I so enjoyed listening to this story. I do have one observation though concerning one small detail. I am in awe of Ms. Johnstone’s ability to craft a delightful tale, but one detail is out of place historically. Crochet was NOT done by ladies in this time period. Spinning, Weaving, (tapestry), and embroidery would have been the pastimes for women in this era. Earliest examples of crochet didn’t appear till the 1820’s.
All in all, this tale was delightful, and who could not love the voices of Timothy Campbell.
