Summary

THE ENTERTAINING AND HEARTWARMING SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER.

Like many couples, Dick and Angel had long dreamed of living in France, but where others might settle for a modest bolthole in the French countryside, the Strawbridges fell in love with a 19th-century fairytale château, complete with 45 rooms, seven outbuildings, 12 acres of land and its own moat.

Throwing caution to the wind, Dick and Angel swapped their two-bedroom flat in East London for an abandoned and derelict castle in the heart of the Loire valley and embarked on the adventure of a lifetime with their two young children Arthur and Dorothy.

Sharing their full journey for the first time, A Year at the Château follows Dick and Angel from when they first moved to France in the depths of winter and found bedrooms infested with flies, turrets inhabited by bats, the wind rattling through cracked windows, and just one working toilet, which flushed into the moat, through to the monumental efforts that went into readying the château for their unforgettable wedding and their incredibly special first Christmas.

Along the way we'll read glorious descriptions of rural life in France, with charming characters, delicious food and wonderful seasonal produce, together with the extraordinary list of renovations and restorations Dick and Angel completed, many of which were never shown on TV.

As warm and entertaining as their much-loved show, A Year at the Château is a truly irresistible story of adventure and heart, epic ambitions and a huge amount of hard graft.

You’ll love it if you love them and the TV show!

I came to ‘The Chateau’ late in the day; over lockdown in January 2021 and it has been my ‘happy place’ ever since! The Strawbridge family are an inspiration on how not to let stresses and strain get the better of you or each other. I decided to buy the book as I wanted further insight into their ‘origins’ story and it didn’t disappoint! Yes there is lots from the show, but I didn’t mind reliving that and there is still a few behind the scenes bits too. I also loved that they read it. They appear to be just themselves throughout the tv show and it’s the same on the audio book, warts and all which I love. Thank you for sharing and best of luck Mr and Mrs Strawbridge for your continuing adventures, I hope we get to share some more of them over the years.

One of worst narrations ever.

Why did the Strawbridges use their own voices to narrate their story? Obviously it makes it relatable but Angela’s high pitched, amateur delivery is really hard to take. Her accent doesn’t help but the most irritating thing is that she is obviously reading it from a their script. Good stories need competent narrators and she just isn’t. Dick is better but his up and down delivery where he is trying to inject light and shade into his voice makes it jerky. They take turns reading a bit then there is a pause and Dick picks up from Angela which is a slight relief. Shame as the story is interesting. They should stick to their strengths. Telling anyone a bedtime story is definitely not one of them.

Excellent Book

I love the show, however the audible book was a great addition to it. Giving the wittiest inside at times.
Get it, you won't be disappointed.

Very Good!

I enjoyed listening to this book. Having watched the series I knew what to expect and the book didn't disappoint. Dick has a very soothing, melodious voice therefore, in my opinion, he is better at narration but Angel is so lovely that I enjoyed her parts just as much. I was sad when I finished it!

Wonderful

Heartwarming, inspirational and beautifully narrated, just loved listening to them both narrating their own story, great to have more of a behind-the-scenes insight having enjoyed the TV show.
