Publisher's summary

The rock star.

There are lots of assumptions people make about rock stars. Shallow. Player. Addict. The truth? I'm none of those. The even bigger truth: The only opinion I care about is hers, and she hates me. Her, as in Gwen Matthews, my twin brother's best friend, the unrequited love of my life. She thinks I'm a liar and a jerk, which is why I pretend to be my brother when she needs help one night.

Except that Gwen is a genius. Literally. So it doesn't take her long to figure out it's me and not my brother, but maybe, just maybe, she's willing to give me a second chance. Because maybe when she looks at me, she only sees a rock star with her best friend's face, but when I look at her, I see my other half. She centers me in a way that no rhythm or line of lyric ever could.

The scientist.

I have three priorities in life at the moment: finish my research, defend my dissertation, and get my PhD so that I can actually figure out what I'm supposed to do with my life. Tom Mendoza won't help me achieve any of those things.

Yet I can't help the sudden feeling that I've been completely wrong about him all this time. The day we first met when we were both teenagers, I saw a glimpse of a sweet, funny boy that felt very much like a kindred spirit, awkward and full of energy and dreams. But that guy seemed to disappear, and in his place was this stereotypical, stupidly hot rock star that did not make sense in my world.

Being a scientist means being willing to admit when you're wrong and reevaluating everything. I might not understand much about human behavior, but I can clearly see the tender underbelly that Tom protects. The subtle rituals he uses to stave off his anxiety. Yes, he's ridiculously hot, but his soul just might be more beautiful than his face, and I'm not sure what to do with that. Especially when I find out that he's in love with me.

Smart Mouth is a full-length contemporary romance and can be listened to as a stand-alone. This is book four in the Work for It series.

Great listen!

Smart Mouth is a fantastic addition to the Smartypants family. I love these smart romance books - I learn so much and I am fascinated by the information the authors teach us.

Smart Mouth has a little bit of everything - opposites attract, rockstar, enemies to lovers, and brothers best friend! This is a sweet, angsty and heartwarming book that will make you fall in love with Gwen and Tom….and maybe the grumpy neighbor.

Gwen is a quirky scientist that is sweet, a little naive and a little clumsy. She loves her job, is not interest in finding love and is trying to figure out what to do once she’s he’s with her doctorate.

Tom is a rockstar that opened up a recording studio, away from the limelight, to help other musicians. He’s had his share of relationships but his heart has been set on one person for many, many years.

Gwen and Tom have to go through some ups and downs, come to terms with past mistakes and figure out their HEA. They are funny, nerdy, hot and fantastic characters.

Lila Winters and Oscar Reyes are new to me narrators. I loved their performance!

The Scientist and The Rockstar!

Smart Mouth is a witty, refreshing story of unrequited love, the pressures of stardom, the power of friendship, and the tenacity of the human spirit. I love the snappy, quick-witted dialogue, and the dynamic characters. Emma sheds light on stigmas around anxiety, ADHD, and interracial relationships. She reminds us not to judge a book by its cover, a nerd by her field of study, or a hot rockstar by his fame. She writes beautifully compassionate, mindful, representative romance.
If you love heroines in STEM and a broody, pining hero, you’ll swoon over Gwen & Tomás!!

I love Lila Winters, she was perfectly cast for Gwen in this audiobook. She brings the brilliant, quirky, lovable Gwen to life with a wonderfully natural performance. Oscar Reyes is a new-to-me narrator, and I was instantly a fan! When I read this book, my heart aches for Tom from his childhood experiences to the vulnerable, charismatic musician. Oscar does a magnificent job of bringing Oscar to life and amplifying Emma Lee Jayne’s enchanting story. Add this best friend’s brother, rockstar romance to your TBL for a swoon-worthy aural romp.
