Publisher's summary

Valor on the Move: Growing up gay in the White House hasn't been easy for Rafael Castillo. But once his family's out of the spotlight, he can be honest with his conservative parents about his sexuality and his dream of being a chef.

It's definitely not part of Rafa's plan to get a new Secret Service agent who's a walking wet dream, but he's made it this long keeping his desires to himself.

Shane's never had room for romance in his life, and he'd certainly never cross that line with a protectee. Keeping Rafa safe at any cost is Shane's mission. But as Rafa gets under his skin, will they both put their hearts on the line?

Test of Valor: With his father no longer president, Rafa Castillo can finally be with ex-Secret Service agent Shane Kendrick. Eager to get away from the questions and judgement, Rafa and Shane are building a new life together in Australia.

Now they just have to get through a visit from the former president and first lady. Rafa's parents certainly don't approve of his romance with 40-year-old Shane, and they're determined to make him see reason. Shane and Rafa just want a normal life together - but when they must suddenly battle for survival, they fight to prove their fierce love can withstand any threat.

Contains mature themes.

Fantastic deal on great books

I was super excited to see these in a box set not only as a fantastic deal but because I just adore all things Keira Andrews. I listened to Valor on the Move and Test of Valor last Summer and thoroughly enjoyed the emotionally gripping mix of romance, mystery/suspense, & thriller components. On their own these are fully developed stories – together they are 18 hours of awesomeness.

Valor on the Move:
Rafa, code name Valor, is the President’s youngest son and deeply in the closet (mostly due to his parent’s political affiliations). Shane is one of his Secret Service agents. I liked that Andrews took the time, and oooh-boy was this a slow burn, for Shane and Rafa to spend a lot of time getting to know each other.

There are a few sex scenes, but nothing that drowns out the relationship or harrowing circumstances the MCs are thrust into.

Test of Valor:
I loved this one even more than the first – maybe because the first was an HFN and this was Shane & Rafa’s HEA. There’s a lot of relationship building, a little bit of personal drama, a little bit of family drama, and smidge of suspense. Fairly low angst, but thoroughly enjoyable.

Definitely one I’ll listen to many times.

Narration:
Iggy Toma does a fantastic job of narrating. He definitely gives Shane a mature sound and Rafa a younger one – while Rafa doesn’t sound like a child. Toma does a great job of giving everyone a distinct voice/sound – which says a lot given how many characters there are and how many of them are men. This is full of so many emotions and Toma brings them to life in a way I never could reading them myself. He’s terrific.

Wish I could review separately!

I have a love/hate with Keira Andrews. I think she creates interesting characters and situations, then beats them to death with too much poorly written sex and mindless repetition. If you’ve read the Amish trilogy, you know that book one is all action, book two is no action, book three is all talking about no action in every possible character combination. It could have been a two book series. Then there’s the Valor “duology”. It’s really one book that no one edited, so it became two.

First the narration. Iggy Toma is a top three narrator for me, but oof- he falls flat when the story moves to Australia in book two. He limps along with an oddly cockney sound. It is as if he tried a generic British/once British affect. It can be quite unlistenable, think high school play. Outside of that, he’s his usual great self.

Book one does a fine job of not making you queasy at the 20 year age difference, Rafael aka “Valor” is the pursuing force. Shane is a pleasantly wounded object of affection, living an internationally solo life, pulled in by the lonely kid he protects. The rigid parents, life in the White House, the mutual beard relationship with his girlfriend all work. I thought the whole president’s son would be hard to take, it’s actually becomes something of a non issue. There’s some intrigue and bad guys and heartache. It works well. I also realized that the book one plot line didn’t allow for much in the way of sex, and that explains why I enjoyed it so much.

Then there’s book two. Once circumstances change and sex is in the table (literally) the gates open and like any other book of hers, so many pages are given over to marathon human relations. It might be tolerable if she wrote it better, but she gets wrapped up in acrobatics and excessive descriptions that sound like she is simply transcribing porn videos from the internet. Jay Bell, Gregory Ashe, Sarina Bowen, even Roan Parrish write much better sex that is contained within the story. I add Roan because while there is a lot of sex, it’s well written and always fits in the storyline.

The second book does have some good points, mainly dealing with how people react to Shane and Rafael’s relationship. There’s more intrigue as well. With some self restraint this could have been a much better pair of books.

All that said, this is still a decent listen, and as an all inclusive, it’s a good deal. Generally recommended.

Another outstanding job by Iggy Toma.
great story and an interesting cast of characters.
Two books for that one credit and it's
well worth the credit and your time to listen.

Two Good Stories

The storyline is well written and flows nicely. The main Agent could use a little more character building, but overall it gets the job done. I recommend both books in this series.

Spicy Rollercoaster? Or just wow that was something.

Over the top, age difference, many sex scenes, danger, guns at one point and wild situations, crazy family, fame, communication issues and a would-be chef who wants to be in Australia.

That’s just the start of this rollercoaster.

Escapist if you’re good with fictional violence and mental aftermath as part of the plot.

Second book is more gritty when it comes to not being quite so unbelievable at times, which was rewardingly rough (communication, and other things but if you thought I meant the sex, yeah, that too).

It gets out of the comfort zone of the first book and that was fine with me, eventually. I felt a progression in the second book. Good to read it as a set or just think of it as one book. HEA took its own sweet time.
There is surfing, trauma, tempers, broody silence and everything but a brass band because why not be Extra?

I liked it.

Iggy Toma did a very very very good job with different character voices, pacing etc. as usual.

I can’t really comment on some accents so that wasn’t a problem for me.

This voice has a talent which should be enjoyed here or elsewhere. He’s just that good.

Enjoyed this story and narration

I love when a story shows the journey to and through love! I liked the MCs and pretty much all of the supporting folks! Throw in the action and spice- this story was a right fit if you like MM romance

Different feels to the HEA

Not my usual storyline to go with, but glad I did.

Narrator was good-- could listen with ease.
Story 1 was great; story 2 took a minute for me to adjust to a real life/spice of life-esqe vibe. Overall not a bad read.

Great story, loved both!!

Loved the way the characters developed, and the plot kept me interested. Performance was great except for the “Australian” accent - it sounded more like a kiwi (New Zealander), with a mix of English accent, and a tiny little bit of Australian. Other than that, great clear narration.

Great story

A valiant attempt at an Australian accent but the story was great. I’d love to read about Darnell and Henry
