Publisher's summary

He needs to get her out of his system. Just once....

Hank Weller doesn’t help people. He leaves that do-gooder nonsense to his best friend, Beau Winston. Hank does what he wants, when he wants, with whomever he wants—and Hank does not want to hire Charlotte Mitchell to be an exotic dancer at his club, The Pink Pony. Sure, he can’t help noticing the dips and curves of her, how shrewd, smart, and funny she is, the fire in her hazel eyes. He’s always noticed. She’d probably draw a crowd and entice the regulars. But after Charlotte’s messy, public divorce made Hank’s club out to be the culprit—and made her the single mother of four kids—he doesn’t need or want any additional bad press courtesy of Charlotte Mitchell. Or the distraction. Unfortunately for him, the town’s prettiest charity case doesn’t seem to understand the meaning of the words nope, no, and never.

Charlotte Mitchell doesn’t much like Hank Weller. Once upon a time, she used to. Years ago, she liked him a whole heck of a lot despite other folks in town labeling him as “eccentric” and “nonconformist”, which were polite Southern alternatives to “filthy rich” and “self-centered douchebag”. Her opinion of him changed dramatically after he volunteered to be her date to junior prom and then promptly stood her up. They haven’t so much as acknowledged each other in more than a decade. But a sudden family emergency means Charlotte needs access to Hank’s club ASAP. Unfortunately for her, the narcissistic fancy-pants doesn’t seem to understand the meaning of the words help, generosity, and compassion.

But he’s about to find himself schooled. Charlotte is going to teach Hank a lesson once and for all about basic human decency, whether he likes it or not.

Spoiler alert...he likes it.

Charming Reprobate Redemption Arc

Penny Reid has an incredible gift. The characters of this series are so rich as a whole, and I swim in their stories to hep me middle through the most difficult of days. This time, though, it’s personal. The reprobate redemption arc combined with the humanization of the over-generous angel mom have hooked me in the heart both deeply and heavily. Tears and longing damn it! As a single mom of two fabulously quirky, smart and challenging kids, the idea of someone secretly generous and openly defiant showing up to help rather than just bless-your-hearting from the sidelines started the first fissures. The man finding something fabulous about each child and forging a separate relationship with each has my poor heart in ribbons. Bittersweet to read in such fun and salty detail about something I have never had nor seen a glimpse of in my reality. I think I will have to torture myself with longing and read it over again immediately. If this story exists maybe real people out there might have inspired it and maybe there’s hope after all. Many tears and a chasm of longing. Wow…. and thanks

Hank ❤️

Absolutely loved this one! Waited for the audio since I knew Joy Nash and Chris Brinkley would take an already wonderful story to the next level. I was not disappointed 🥳

Penny Reid!

I just can’t say how much I love the universe that Penny Reid has created! Chris Brinkley and Joy Nash are my favorite narrators and these books wouldn’t be the same with out them!! Hank’s story really touched me - especially during the epilogue. This book made me happy and ready for the next story that needs to be told!

Cute but lackluster

I love this author. She’s hilarious! Starting the story off with a funeral for a bookkeeper was really clever and entertaining. But this book was a little bland after the first half or so. I kind of held on to see if Hank would give her a lap dance 😂, but I think I had about 4 hours left before I stopped listening.
Chris Brinkley and Joy Nash are what sell the books for me. Always 5 stars for their narration.
Also, Hank’s weird political rant to a 9 year old seemed a off and out of character. His political views seem more like they fit the demographic of a white upper-middle class woman living in the suburbs of Chicago. Faults in the two party system, the Fed, our federal government failing, ok sure. But I don’t know of any male rural southern entrepreneurs who would advocate for giving up their rights of minority representation our constitution grants them because it was “written by a bunch of dead white guys.” You know, States rights and the whole “don’t tread on me sentiment” are the rural way of life and how we preserve small town culture. You know, just advice for writing about some alpha male living in the middle of nowhere Tennessee haha.

Sexy and Thoughtful

Charlotte and Hank are 2 of the best characters in this series! And so are Charlotte’s children who ❤️ add so much love to the story.

Finally Hank!

Hank has been mentioned is often in these stories and I was really looking forward to hearing his story. It didn't disappoint! And I'm really glad that my favorite male narrator - Chris Brinkley - and one of my two favorite female narrators - Joy Nash - read this book. There is something comforting about this little imaginary town and it's people and Hank has always been one of my favorites.

Perfection

The perfect narrators and the perfect story! I loved all of Green Valley but this one stands out! How do these narrators do it? Their performance of characters other than the main characters is the best I’ve heard. Bravo!

Oh, Hank!

I listened to this twice before writing a review, hoping I’d better capture why I loved it so much and… nope. This story just hits *all* the marks. Grumpy/sunshine. He-falls-first. And definitely the steam! Hank and Charlotte are *chef’s kiss*. Seeing him fall for her kids, too, was just next level wonderful. Too many good lines, but the first one that made me pause the book to gape, then rewind and listen again:

“You cannot dance at the G Spot,” Hank said as soon as I was down the stairs.

I glanced over my shoulder long enough to say, “Pardon me?” But continued on until we drew even with his car.

“You can’t strip there.”

I turned and crossed my arms again, an incredulous expression on my face. “I’m sorry, but are you my daddy?”

“Do you want me to be your daddy?”

Green Valley Gem

One of my favorite Penny Reid books— and honestly there are quite a few favorites…. Set in Green Valley with the infamous Hank Weller- Beau Winston’s best friend. Charlotte and her kids are adorable and so easy to love. The cameos from Beau, Roscoe, Jet and Sienna AND especially Cletus add the perfect touch of the Winston series to this book.

Great narration. Can’t go wrong with Chris Brinkley and Joy Nash. A touch of the South without being distracting.

Really like this series

Like that this continues in the town and still has Winston brothers in it. And I can’t get over the perfection of narrator Chris Brinkley’s voice.
