Publisher's summary

There’s only one hope of fighting an ancient evil....

Uzmantine has awoken and is determined to crush Chamenos underfoot. As society teeters on the brink of civil war, the only hope for survival rests in the hands of Pieter and his dragon, Gloriox. The task is too big for one person, but Pieter is the only one who can teach the citizens of Chamenos what they need to know about becoming dragon riders. And with his growing grasp of Chamentine magic, he poses the biggest threat to Uzmantine and her gathering forces.

But Pieter still needs to learn what it means to be a leader—especially when sacrifice and death are necessary costs of victory.

The fight has just begun, and Uzmantine and her Draznar won’t stop. Pieter will do anything to keep his people safe, but there’s no way to avoid the casualties of war. And the grief of loss may be too strong to overcome.

Queen of the Dragons' Ava Richardson invites you to immerse yourself in a dragon-filled world with epic magic, fearless characters and, at its heart, the deep bond between dragon and rider.

Coming Into His Own as Commander

I am so enjoying this series about Pieter and his allies as they try against terrible odds to free their world of the evil beings that would destroy them. This book picks up shortly after book one ends, as Pieter is training his new Chamenos warriors and the newly hatched dragons. In this book, Pieter comes into his own as a leader, but it certainly isn't easy for him. His would-be warriors and his closest friends have more faith in him than he does. But his internal struggles felt authentic for someone who has been chosen by fate, as it were, to do what he is doing, not because of any personal ambition of his own. I love how his dragon Gloriox is so supportive and wise, as is Rosa, Pieter's slow-burn love interest. (They actually share a few chaste kisses in this book! Ooooo!) I love how Rosa got a bit of her own story with that one pesky dragon! This book has losses that Pieter and his ragtag band of rebellion warriors grapple with, and they have to make an uneasy peace with someone who has betrayed them. The various showdowns with the Draznar and Evalea help Peter learn more about the strength of his emotion-driven Chamenos magic and his abilities as a strategist, tactician, and leader. The final scene with Evalea teases about the much bigger battle ahead, the focus of the next book. I'm glad I already have that one downloaded and ready to go! The narrator does an excellent job voicing the different creatures and people. I love the Chamenos people's Scottish accents, and the narrator makes the dragons sound very old and wise. An excellent listen, and highly recommended. You do need to listen to the first book of this series to truly appreciate this book's story.

I am loving this series

After book 1, I couldn’t wait for this one and it didn't disappoint. I love the characters. Some are good & others are evil. After the battle in book 1 Peter knew that Evelaia and the new Queen would be the next battle his team would face. He had an untrained team of Dragon riders so he had to get them ready. He began a traing regiment and he felt he was not doing a good job. Gloriox (his dragon) & Rosa both told him that was not true, he earned the title of Commander from his team. Peter wouldn't believe it until one day when his recruits faced a small enemy group. They surprised him with their skill and he was pleased. Rosa bonded with a dragon as well which was funny. When the battle finally came they were sure they had a chance for victory. Great story & can't wait for book 3.

Hard to stay engaged.

This was an ok story. The narrator isn’t great and I just couldn’t get into the story very much. It has its moments but it didn’t captivate me. Hard to follow at times because go from ok to crazy so fast and I have to back up to figure out exactly what happened.
