Publisher's summary

Two rooftops in suburban Ohio. A 75-year-old man and a nine-year-old girl sit on houses full of secrets. Literally. Bernard wants nothing more than to enjoy his beer (and perhaps kill a few sparrows), but Rory next door has different plans for him.

With six decades between them and only four chance encounters to connect, these unlikely new friends unearth what's buried in each other and find new ground.

Warning: This play includes tap dancing, pumpkin throwing, and air-hugging. The Net Will Appear was edited and mixed by Tyler Whitlatch of Plunk Production and sound designed by Nick Long.

About Matilda Lawler (Rory): Matilda Lawler is currently a series regular on Station Eleven, a limited series for HBO Max based on the novel by Emily St. John Mandel. She portrays young Kirsten, the story’s protagonist. Matilda played the titular role in the Disney+'s original movie Flora and Ulysses directed by Lena Kahn. Matilda played Michaela McManus' daughter in The Block Island Sound by the McManus Brothers for Netflix. On stage, Matilda originated the role of Honor Carney on Broadway in The Ferryman, written by Jez Butterworth and directed by Sam Mendes, which won the 2019 Tony Award for Best Play. Matilda made her professional stage debut in The Net Will Appear starring opposite Richard Masur.

About Richard Masur (Bernard): Richard Masur is an American character actor who has appeared in more than 80 films. From 1995 to 1999, he served two terms as president of the Screen Actors Guild (SAG). Masur currently sits on the corporate board of the Motion Picture & Television Fund. A Bazillion stars 🌟🤩

I expected a lot and got so much more. Erin, perfectly written and recorded. Matilda and Richard... no words are adequate. I laughed so hard. I had some tears at the end.

Hilarious and Heartfelt!

I loved this refreshing, sweet, and hilarious play about the unlikely rooftop friendship between Bernard and Rory! Bernard is 75 years old and likes drinking on his roof alone while bird watching. Rory is a talkative nine year old just looking for a friend. She is smart but naïve and Bernard's dry sarcasm makes their conversations so hilarious. Rory eventually wears Bernard down and they forge a sweet and silly friendship. Their conversations cleverly reveal very personal moments in their lives making me laugh, cry, and gasp.
Matilda Lawler, and Richard Masur were absolutely brilliant as Rory and Bernard. They completely encapsulated these captivating characters, with their contagious enthusiasm, and dry wit, making me feel all the hope, joy, and sorrow they felt.
Mallon's ability to see life with all it's joys and difficulties and then create something witty, with heartfelt emotion is superb. This is a quick listen I will love to listen to again and again!

Erin has turned me into a Audio Play junkie! I never knew I would enjoy them so much. Bernard and Rory are the type of characters you can't help but fall in love with. The kinda grumpy old man and the very talkative and uncensored pre-teen girl. They are such an unlikely pair that really do help each other so much more than they even realize. As always with Erin's Audio Play's the storyline is so funny with the satire feel but with a deep and important meaning. I love the play but I also loved the actors so much, I feel like this play was written with them in mind because the casting was just that perfect! If you haven't checked out an Erin Mallon Audio Play yet... DO IT NOW!

An Unexpected Friendship

This play was great! Erin Mallon has the ability to put words together that draw you in from the first line. There were some real funny moments in this play, but you also get the seriousness, sadness, and loneliness that these two characters are feeling. This play just proves that everybody needs a connection, and sometimes you out your faith and trust into someone you never imagined would be in your life. The narration was off the chain!!! These two knocked it out of the park. I could actually see them across from each other having these conversations. I wish there was an option to rate this higher because it deserves a solid 10/10!!

The Net Will Appear

How have I not reviewed this yet?!
I re-listened today and forgot how much I loved these characters.
Bernard is dealing with life and how to cope with what is coming next. And he befriends Rory in the most unlikeliest of ways and I am so hear for it. It is done with wit and charm with the touches of real life. I just thoroughly enjoyed it.
Please if you haven’t taken a listen do yourself a favor and give it a listen it will make your heart happy. (air hugs)

She did it again!

Erin Mallon is a force to be reckoned with in audio plays. This one is no different. The depth she gets into her characters in such a short period of time is amazing. Rory has so much life in her and hides her disappointments with quirks and humor and Bernard had a soft side deep, deep down inside his grump. The acting alone makes this play worth a listen, both were amazing but, to me, Matilda stole the show. Richard Masur was great, a seasoned pro, but there was something in Matilda’s delivery that made this play for me. She’s going to be a major star! If you miss the theater, you need to check this out along with some of Erin’s other works.

Exceptional!!

Erin mother f&*%ing Mallon folks!!! How the heck do you always write these magnificent plays?? You give me moments of laughter, moments of tears, moments of awkwardness. You are truly exceptional at writing these humorous plays that give you every bit of the feels.

This story of a very rambunctious and lonely girl who befriends who very lonely neighbor is absolutely perfection. It is kismet that they met, when they needed each other so much. Both of their stories break your heart a little bit. But their stories are so relatable, which is what makes this even more poignant.

Matilda the little girl who plays Rory is truly phenomenal. Like talent beyond her years. She is what I imagine is the more loud version of Erin as a child. Richard was also exceptional. He made you want to just give him the biggest hug. I loved this play. Erin never ever stop writing these plays.
