Publisher's summary

Winnifred Gobaldi and Byron Visser are not best friends.

Yes, they’ve known each other for years, but they’re not even friendly. Winnie considers them more like casual, distant acquaintances who find each other barely tolerable, especially when he's being condescending (which is all the time).

The truth is, they have nothing in common. She’s a public school science teacher with stars in her eyes, and he’s a pretentious, joyless double PhD turned world-famous bestselling fiction author. She loves sharing her passion for promulgating women in STEM careers and building community via social media, and he eschews all socialization, virtual or otherwise. She’s looking for a side hustle to help pay down a mountain of student debt, and his financial portfolio is the stuff of fiduciary wet dreams. So why are they faking a #bestfriend relationship for millions of online spectators?

When a simple case of tit-for-tat trends between nonfriends leads to a wholly unexpected kind of pretend, nothing is simple. Sometimes, it takes a public audience to reveal the truth of private feelings, and rarely—very rarely—you should believe what you see online.

Ten Trends to Seduce Your Bestfriend is a full-length, complete standalone, adult contemporary romantic comedy.

Drew me in

The struggles the characters had to deal with to communicate really drew me into the story. We all need lessons in communication.

hesitate to purchase bc review but...

I really liked this book! not sure why it had bad reviews. Penny Reid is a slow burn author and this was that! The back story for each character made the awkwardish beginnings make since. I always enjoy a H and h with imperfect love stories it makes the happy ending so much better.

Not a typical Penny Reid read

I usually enjoy this author but this particular book was just very back and forth whining and apologizing. I tried to get into it but just wasn't my cup of tea.

A fantastic listen

I thought the narration was outstanding and a great story. I will say that some of the story was dragging out too long but I believe that that mindset of the characters were true to life. Wonderful book and well worth the listen.

Winnie and Byron have my heart

Format - E ARC, audiobook

Rating- ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

Spice- 🔥🌶🌶

Series- Standalone (For Now)

Troupes- Grumpy/Sunshine, Forced Proximity, He Falls First, Duel POV,

CW- Sensory Processing Disorder, childhood trauma, online harassment(on page but not detailed), unwanted sexual advances

I read the ARC of this book back in the summer and absolutely loved it and had to have the audio. And after listening to the audio It’s still my favorite book I’ve read last year! So below is my original review of the story. But I’ll talk about The narration first! It’s freaking fantastic! I wasn’t sure of Patrick Boylan when Penny shared a clip on the Patreon but he quickly won me over! And Cielo Camaro just knocks it out of the park!

*dazedly enchanted slow blink*. 🤩😍😊🥲

Ok I’ll find some more words…

This book is long, the longest book Penny has written thus far, and still I wanted more. I could have easily read another 150K words about these two and were life takes them (hint, hint nudge, nudge 😉).

These characters are so dynamic (and I say that a lot) but Winnie and Byron are people I feel like I know and love personally. There is so much depth and backstory to them. I related to both of them heavily and highlighted so many passages that spoke to my lived experiences about a range of different topics. Also as a side note I feel like Byron and Cletus(Byron) Winston would have a lot to talk about..

The premise of this story was so stinking fun, I loved the need for forced proximity with the different trend challenges and how Penny went into detail about the world on social media and what goes into it! It’s something I am still learning and struggling with.

Most of all I love and adore Penny’s writing style, it’s fun and imaginative and never fails to catch me by surprise and make me laugh out loud. This book is written duel POV but it favors Winnie and her light hearted, go with the flow voice. Byron only has a few chapters, but in them Penny gives him a very clear and exacting voice to express his thoughts, wishes and opinions.

Without giving away to many spoilers, this book is a slow (glacial) burn, and we spend this first 57% of this book just sitting on the edge of our seats waiting for them Kiss! Penny delivers some steamy swoony goodness, but in the end she’s a bit of a sadist and if I didn’t love everything else about this book and these characters it defiantly would have lost a star. Penny you know what you did. 😑😘

Not typical Penny Reid

Good narration but so, so drug out. Love Penny Reid books…except for this one.

Stick to this author's other books

Characters in their late twenties having high school level conversations, relationships, and interactions (which just becomes annoying). Not nearly as good as other books from this author.

A favorite to listen to again and again.

This slow burn romance was not my favorite the first time I listened to it but I fell in love the second and third time. I think it’s because I didn’t understand Byron and wasn’t sure what he could do for Winnie. But after some reflection, I came back to this and absolutely loved it. This is my third time listening and I still catch subtle nuances I missed the first two times.

Perfect

Reid always creates wonderfully complex characters, but this story line was beautifully crafted, too. It was funny, poignant, fascinating and layered. I thoroughly enjoyed it and recommended it immediately. Thank you for introducing us to Winnie and Byron!
