Publisher's summary

The unsolved murder of a young activist leads to the discovery of much darker crimes in New York Times best-selling author Allison Brennan’s latest compelling thriller to feature the young, edgy detective Kara Quinn and the loner FBI agent Matt Costa. This time they work to uncover possible ties to a high-stakes cartel in the Southwest desert.

Something mysterious is killing the wildlife in the mountains just south of Tucson. When a college intern turned activist sets out to collect her own evidence, she, too, ends up dead. Local law enforcement is slow to get involved. That’s when the mobile FBI unit goes undercover to infiltrate the town and its copper refinery in search of possible leads.

Quinn and Costa find themselves scouring the desolate landscape, which keeps revealing clues to something much darker - greed, child trafficking and more death. As the body count adds up, it’s clear they have stumbled onto much more than they bargained for. Now they must figure out who is at the heart of this mayhem and stop them before more innocent lives are lost.

Hard to follow

There are a lot of characters and the narrator doesn't vary the voices enough to distinguish between characters. It's hard to follow. Didn't finish.

Good story. Performance could be better.

Loved the story. The narrator was a little stiff and enunciated a little too hard most of the time and it distracted from the story. Otherwise liked it a lot.

ok

Good story line, but told awkwardly at times. Narrator didn't improve it. Not bad, and I did enjoy the book. But not great.

Overall, a good story, good plot, good narration,

Overall, I liked this book. The plot is very feasible with quite a few twists along the way, so it always keeps you guessing at what exactly is really going on. There is chemistry between Costa and Quinn, but nothing too explicit so I think it was tastefully done.

One of the benefits of reading a book verses watching a movie is that you really have an opportunity to get into the head of the characters, and know what they're thinking, and hear them reason out clues and such - this book did this masterfully, and you really got to know Quinn and Costa really well as a result. Most of the other characters in the book are seen through the eyes of these two, although there are a few more that give some insight along the way.

The narrator did a pretty good job; she tried to make her voice sound deeper for male characters and more feminine for female ones or children. I did have a bit of a hard time making out who was saying what about mid-way through, as she didn't seem to do this for a little while, but then started again near the last quarter of the book; her voice is pleasant enough, so it's not really too big of a deal.

Overall, I think this was a good story, with a lot of good supporting characters (Costa and Quinn being the major ones). The story has a lot of depth and has a story behind a story, so it kept my interest throughout.

If you like a good mystery, like following along with the thought process of investigating clues, and like getting into the minds of characters in a book, I think you'll like this one quite a bit.

The ending, in my opinion, left a little to be desired, as it seemed it was wrapped up too quickly, in relation to the rest of the book - almost as if it was rushed. Also, were two things, in specific, that were not explained, so that seems to support the idea that it was a little rushed. I will not explain what seems to have not been elaborated on, as I don't want to leave any spoilers.

Wonderful read!!

1st book was good but the narrator was less than desirable- well she must have read the undesirable reviews and amped it us with this book! The story content was great, the research seemed accurate and the characters believable! Well done Allison Brennan! Next book waiting for late April release!

Solid and decent yarn.

Enjoyed but probably not enough to continue with the series. At least it kept me going until the end....
