Publisher's summary

Audio bonus! The audio download edition includes an exclusive interview with Nelson DeMille, Alex DeMille, and Scott Brick!

This instant New York Times best seller and “outstanding” (Publishers Weekly, starred review) thriller features a brilliant and unorthodox Army investigator, his enigmatic female partner, and their hunt for the Army’s most notorious — and dangerous — deserter.

When Captain Kyle Mercer of the Army’s elite Delta Force disappeared from his post in Afghanistan, a video released by his Taliban captors made international headlines. But circumstances were murky: Did Mercer desert before he was captured? Then a second video sent to Mercer’s Army commanders leaves no doubt: The trained assassin and keeper of classified Army intelligence has disappeared.

When Mercer is spotted a year later in Caracas, Venezuela, by an old Army buddy, top military brass task Scott Brodie and Maggie Taylor of the Criminal Investigation Division to fly to Venezuela and bring Mercer back to America - preferably alive. Brodie knows this is a difficult mission, made more difficult by his new partner’s inexperience, by their undeniable chemistry, and by Brodie’s suspicion that Maggie Taylor is reporting to the CIA.

With ripped-from-the-headlines appeal, an exotic and dangerous locale, and the hairpin twists and inimitable humor that are signature DeMille, The Deserter is the first in a timely and thrilling new series from an unbeatable team of True Masters: the number one New York Times best seller Nelson DeMille and his son, award-winning screenwriter Alex DeMille.

Nothing like a 11 hour book taking 17 hours

Wordy. Obnoxious at times. Other times Brody made me lol. Took forever to get to the end and then skipped right over it. Great character development, but it was too much for me. Ultimately I finished it because I was invested in the characters, but left disappointed.

A three-way collaboration that rocks

Between the father, the son and the voice ghost, we have all the talent I can take. This was fun and engaging. Please keep it up. Thank you.

a fresh story, complex and interesting

I thought I'd read every possible "highly-trained-soldier-goes-off-because-something-bad-happened" story, but this one is full of fresh places and interesting encounters. The characters are somewhat cliched, but not too much - the main character is so smarty-pants and sarcastic, all the time, it gets old. "Brilliant, but flawed" is the baseline for most of the characters in these types of novels, same for these. But the story takes place in Venezuela, and I found that part fascinating. What a messed up place.

A tired plot.

The story is told with sufficient detail, but this is a well-covered plot. It's the dialogue I found utterly insufferable - cliche and stupid - tries way too hard to be clever. Scott Brick, as always, does a good job narrating. Went to return it several times, but eventually made it to the end.

Collaborators Will Be Shot!

In and interview after the book with the two authors and Scott Brick, Nelson DeMille reveals that he does not like working with another author....until now. In fact, he has a sign on his desk from WW II that says "Collaborators will be shot!"
Well, the collaboration between Nelson DeMille and his son Alex DeMille is just about as perfect as you can get. Though the lead character is not John Corey, this new guy on the block has a style of his own....R I G H T! And his sidekick is a beautiful and fearless blond. What's not to like?
I understand the Family DeMille will be making this a series. Count me in for being one of the first to get the next book when it comes out.

Boring

So boring that I quit listening 3/4 of the way through the book. I am a Nelson DeMille fan and have always been captivated by his stories. Not this one. Yawn.

DeMille delivers again!

Once again DeMille has given us a great story line, amazing character development and the opportunity to appreciate Scott Brick’s performance.
