Hunches, horse races, and heartbreak!

Ten years after Simone Payton broke his heart, all Roscoe Winston wants is a doughnut. He'd also like to forget her entirely, but that's never going to happen. Roscoe Winston remembers everything - every look, every word, every single unrequited second - and the last thing he needs is another memory of Simone.

Unfortunately, after one chance encounter, Simone keeps popping up everywhere he happens to be....

Ten years after Roscoe Winston dropped out of her life, all Simone Payton wants is to exploit him. She'd also like some answers from her former best friend about why he ghosted her, but if she never gets those answers, that's a-okay. Simone let go of the past a long time ago. Seriously, she has. She totally, totally has. She is definitely not still thinking about Roscoe. Nope. She's more than happy to forget he exists.

But first, she needs just one teeny-tiny favor....

Dr. Strange Beard is a full-length romantic comedy novel, can be listened to as a stand-alone, and is the fifth audiobook in the USA Today best-selling Winston Brothers series.

Too much Simone

I will preface this with an apology to Penny. I normally adore everything she puts out there but I could not connect with this one. I started reading the ebook until the audiobook became available. Now I'm left wondering if I would have enjoyed the story more if I had just read it. Chloe Miller's narration was AWFUL. She mispronounced words like hastily and tsunami. Did she even have a production editor? And don't even get me started on her so-called Tennessee accent. If Chris Brinkley had more narration time it would have been more enjoyable, in my opinion. His narration is always excellent.

I was intrigued the the Darrel storyline but I was also a little confused by the time jump. I feel like we missed so much, which I'm sure will be explained in the next few books. Or at least I hope so.

I can say without a doubt that I will not recommend the audio version of Dr. Strange Beard to my friends. I will certainly never listen to this audiobook again. I'll give the book a second try after I get over how disappointed I feel right now.

Somewhat disappointed

Dr Strange Beard doesn’t live up to the previous Winston books or the knitting club books. The story is almost entirely about Simone. And her character wasn’t even well developed. Roscoe’s interest in animals and veterinary medicine were only mentioned in passing. I was hoping for more about Roscoe. There wasn’t much interaction with the other Winstons. The book felt like it was almost all Simone’s stream of consciousness. It’s not a bad book, just not as good as Ms Reid’s previous books.

Used to love this series. . .

I am not quite sure how writing can get worse over time but the last two books in this series just haven’t been great. The last one I couldn’t finish. This one I almost bailed on but pushed through. Chris Brinkley is an awesome narrator but Chloe Miller not so great. Not horrible but not good. I love these men which keeps me coming back. Not sure I will be able to listen to Billy’s story

Disappointing

I love this series but this book was disappointing. I really did not like Simone or the voice for her. She made everyone sound super pitiful, especially Roscoe. There was nothing endearing about Simone's character and no chemistry between them. You never really figure out why Roscoe is so in love with her. She just seemed annoying to me. I will say I have loved all of the other books and characters and especially the male narrator!

Oh Roscoe

I have been waiting for this to come out in audio for a while patiently waiting.
I have always had a soft spot for Roscoe so I wanted his story so badly. Though I liked this book it wasn’t my favorite. Maybe I had too much many expectations? I don’t know.
I think Simone and Roscoe are totally meant for each other. I just wanted more story more connection something. It felt very one-sided for me.

I love Chris Brinkley’s narration, Chloe’s narration is ok it just felt like something was missing.

Can’t!

I can’t even finish this book! I’ve loved all the Winston brothers books, but this was a waste of money! All of Penny Reid’s books have been AWESOME... EXCEPT FOR THIS ONE!

disapointed

I am a Reid fan but the heroine's character development was not compelling. She started out witty but unlikable, by turns thoughtless and self absorbed, moved on to a little cruel and demanding, and finished up with more self absorption. I had serious doubts about her maturity level for her profession. The hero felt complex and his growth had me, as well as the awesome supporting cast. The narration was true to the characters and made this book tolerable for me. Please don't set these spoiled girls take up too much room in such a great series.

Loved all except her rant about policeman

I liked it all but skipped the cliché and politically charged rant about racism. It read more as an opinion article in a newspaper than a what should appear in the novel. This is a light hearted romance novel. Let's keep it that way.

Required Listening for 2020

This might be my favorite Winston Brother novel. The story line is so timely. The stark reality of racism, crime, child abuse, self doubt, and self love are “knitted” perfectly into the cloth of this beautiful modern fairy tale.

Improved female narration

I loved Roscoe and Simone’s story! It appears that previous reviews did not like the female narration, but it was rereleased in August with a new Simone. She was fantastic ! Great story and performance.
