Navigating the four critical seasons of relationship

The vast majority of young people will still pass through the key phases of singleness, dating, engagement, and marriage in their twenties. Yet they are delaying marriage longer than any generation in human history. Why?

For the first time in history, the average age for an American woman having her first child, 26, is younger than the average age of her first marriage, 27. More children than ever are growing up in fatherless homes, despite the overwhelming evidence that in every measurable way this is bad for the child. The Center for Disease Control also recently reported a dramatic rise in sexually transmitted disease nationwide. In Rhode Island alone, since the onset of online dating, reported cases of Syphilis has risen 79%, and HIV has increased by 33%. Though many young people can avoid early pregnancy and STDs, most cannot dodge the depression and feelings of isolation that characterize this modern generation. Studies show a dramatic rise in self-reported loneliness among the young. All of our technological connectivity has not made us feel more connected. In many ways, the very screens that are meant to link us to others have become shields blocking us from the deep intimacy we crave. Many have discovered that where there is a lack of intimacy, addiction often rises to take its place. How can a young person navigate such troubled waters? Is there hope out there?

Like a sailor on turbulent seas, we need to look up and see the North Star: the fixed points in the sky whereby we might navigate the objective realities in life. We need the skill-set to know how to journey through life and how to select the right people to journey alongside. In this book we will chart a course through the four relational phases that the vast majority of human beings on the planet will pass through in their twenties: singleness, dating, engaged and married.

Makes You Think

A book that does a great job presenting a Godly perspective on the modern age of dating. Ben did a good job presenting a general, overarching theme to romantic relationships and connected them to the smaller details and practical examples well. Definitely recommend this to the young adults of the generation, but also to older couples, since it does address how the current culture affects both married and single relationships.

A must read for dingles or divorcees!!!

This is an eye-opener in many ways mainly when he talks about your devotion to the Lord must be first and you need to have a strong relationship with the Lord before you venture out to try to find a man and the qualities you pursue in a man he breaks it down on not looking for a product but looking for a relationship that's going to last despite what your check box list is...beauty fades!!!!

Some great truths within!

Some great truths, but geared towards a younger crowd, not a thirty-something single. There was a lot I enjoyed, but a lot seemed overly simplified, and at times almost condescending. There was some great explanations of submission as it concerns married life though.

Peace-inducing at the soul level.

Single, Dating, Engaged, Married blew my expectations out of the water. Modern dating has no ground rules, but the Bible contains lessons to guide us through the decades of life in which we fall in love, couple, and uncouple - all before ever getting married.

I had been suffering for several months from anxiety about my ambiguous dating relationship with an overall good guy. The chapters on dating made me realize how he has Not been leading by providing me with clarity, and how I have jumbled up the Godly order of autonomy before laying claims on each other’s plans, which comes only if/when engagement happens. This book provides clear definitions and explanations based on bible chapters, which is peace-inducing at the soul level, much better than the well-meaning but vague advice that we often hear from our married friends and family such as “You’ll just know when you’ve met the one.”

Ben Stuart is humorous in how he shares his personal anecdotes and poignant in expressing God’s love and caring for us through the often-painful experiences of dating. He assures us dating can have less pain if we follow biblical teachings on what it means to truly love and to know that we are loved abundantly.

Must read for every Christian!

I love this because I didn't realize how clueless I was about dating as a 32 year old Christian man. I think el every Christian should read this as the author is always pointing to live God first.
