Publisher's summary

First, we leaned in. Now we stand up.

Jaclyn Johnson - the founder and CEO behind Create & Cultivate, the fastest growing online platform and conference for millennial women in business - offers a rallying cry for a new generation of women who are redefining the meaning of work on their own terms: WorkParty. Women who want it all and more, and guess what? They can have it.

Jaclyn suffered a massive blow in her early 20s. She was on an upward career climb and confidently moved across the country for a job - and then was abruptly let go. Attempting to turn that closed door into an open window, she launched a company with a trusted business partner. Soon after, she discovered said business partner had made detrimental decisions to the company without her knowledge. Before she knew it, she was in the throes of a brutal business partner breakup. She was only 24.

Determined to bounce back, Jaclyn overhauled the mess that was her life, and by the time she was in her early 30s, she had sold a company and launched the much-buzzed about Create & Cultivate platform - and advised and invested in multiple million-dollar projects at the same time. So, how did she do it?

In WorkParty, Jaclyn shows how she turned distrust into determination, frustration into fuel, and heartache into hard work - and how you can, too.

With stories from leading female entrepreneurs including Christene Barberich (cofounder of Refinery29), Alli Webb, (creator of Drybar), Morgan Debaun (founder of Blavity), Jen Gotch of Ban.do, Rebecca Minkoff, and Kendra Scott, you will learn the tips and tricks from the best in the business while cultivating the passion and happiness you need to succeed. By embracing failure and reconciling your femininity with being a boss, you’ll join the movement that is WorkParty - and have fun along the way.

So this is what the Instagram girls talk about at brunch...

If you are in Business and Marketing, this is a book to add to your 2018 required reading list. Sure, some of it feels “girly” or #millennialAF but that’s the point. Johnson is speaking the parlance of our times but what she espouses is anything but basic. This is the first book of its kind, one that speaks to female entrepreneurs as peers and friends that is current and applicable right now. Most marketing and biz books aren’t moving fast enough to be relevant, this one is. It’s also a crucial read for women when it comes to money. It gives a solid overview of how much work we have to do in learning to talk about money. This book is also advice that’s to and from people who seem like “nice girls from nice families”. While Johnson can only speak to her experience (which she does well) and is clearly a VERY HARD WORKER, she still comes from a more privileged POV in this book. Talks about sexism, #metoo, failure, race, money and other really challenging topics stay on a fairly sunny side of the street. Maybe a bit of the pussy hat feminist. But if you’re like me, and find yourself distracted by those things, my advice is to keep reading and listening. Rewind and listen again. Her personal stories are here to help women in a professional landscape and her brand is cheerful, pink, and brunch with besties... for some people that life is their norm, for others that can feel aspirational or unrealistic. Wherever you are though, you can probably learn from Jaclyn Johnson. I’m so grateful that she’s sharing. If you’re not the person who comes from the shiny, girly world of the new boss babe order- you might not relate at times. Or even understand what she’s talking about. You might roll your eyes and not want to listen. But do it! When the nice, popular girl invites you to brunch- GO WITH HER! Get the avocado toast. I want to learn from people who seem happy and successful, inspired and kind. I had to leave judgment at the door for this Work Party and I’m so so glad I did. #blessed

Skip and listen to Second Life podcast

Many of the highlights of this book appeared in Jaclyn’s appearance on the Second Life podcast, where her performance is more enthusiastic and organic.

Embarrassing

Her voice makes it hard to pay attention and her story is not remotely relatable.

Great movement & flow

I loved Jaclyn's unique recount of her career journey. This book is a must listen! It was encouraging to hear her path, which ultimately brought her to "CEO" status, included life-altering setbacks and personal struggles. I also love it when the book is narrated by the author herself!
