Editorial reviews

This program reveals the timelessness of Keller's autobiography. Her courageous spirit her greatness never becomes out of date. As the program opens, the listener can hear the frustration and sadness in Bresnahan's voice as Keller struggles to express herself to those outside her dark, silent world. Like a sigh of relief, the narrator recounts Keller's joy when her instructor, Anne Sullivan, breaks through the communication barrier. In a refreshingly modest manner, Bresnahan tells of Keller's remarkable academic achievements and her indebtedness to friends and mentors. Her passion for literature rings clearly in the narrator's blissful tone when addressing this subject. Those looking for an uplifting listening experience will find it here.

Publisher's summary

As a 2-year-old, Helen Keller was stricken with a mysterious illness which left her blind and deaf. It wasn't until she was 6, and a teacher, Miss Sullivan, entered her life, that she was able to communicate with her family. In her unforgettable autobiography, Helen shares her struggle with, and ultimate triumph over, her disability. When it was first published in 1902, her story gained the attention of some of the most famous people of her day and it was later popularized by the stage play and movie The Miracle Worker.

A wonderful story, but...

Any additional comments?

The prose is wonderful and artfully performed, however the audio cuts out repeatedly and does not have Helen's letters written between 1877-1901 which comprise 100 plus pages of the published book.

Beautiful! "Simply Inspiring"

To anyone who has all 5 senses and has ever made an excuse about what they cannot improve their lives in some positive way "NEEDS" to read this book. For someone such as Helen Keller, who lived most of her life without the ability to hear or see, who accomplished the great things she accomplished, There's no reason why people today should make any "excuses" on why they cannot find ways (or better ways) to improve themselves, and their life styles... This book hits the core of a person, "it touches your spirit."

An eloquent tribute to her teacher

Despite being deaf and blind, Helen Keller composed a beautiful narrative of her life from birth until her college years. Her descriptions of her experiences are vivid and animated. Her humble nature resonates as she gives credit to her teacher, Anne Sullivan, and all of the others who accompanied her on her amazing journey through life.

Meeting Helen Keller for the second time

Ms Helen Keller is one of the most amazing people who ever lived. I am delighted to have now read her second auto-biography. She wrote her fist one when twelve years of age, the age I was a when I met her the first time through reading her life's history up to that point.

Now I just finished reading of her again in her second auto-biography. This time I met a delightful, charming, well-read author and well-educated woman. She wrote this one when she was 52 years of age.

Helen Keller was a woman of vision, although she lost her physical sight at 19 months of age, and she was also a woman whose heart heard the deepest depths of understanding. One who took in so much of our world through her life experiences , literature and people she met throughout our world. She achieved deep understanding of both people and of our physical earth although she herself physically heard no sound, nor physically saw anything, she was still able to see and hear far deeper than most people. Her story should be read. It is amazing to share her life and learn how she was able to achieve all that she accomplished and understood of people and of our world. She was one of the greatest communicators who has ever lived. Review by L. L. Dreier

Remarkable and beautiful

One of the best books I've ever read. Her experiences as a person who overcame great adversity to have a very full and remarkable life are beautiful and amazing, but her views on education and experiences as an avid lifelong learner are even more inspiring. If you are a fan of "alternative" education this book is not to be missed.

Great book!

The Story of My Life was an interesting book! Helen Keller was really good at reading and understanding people for being blind and deaf. She had to learn at a very early age to manage her being blind and deaf. This book is an autobiography showcasing her ability to read and communicate with others. She was a very inspirational person. She has inspired many people to never give up and always keep going. I gave this book four stars because autobiographies aren't my favorite type of book but other than that it was a very good book!

Inspiring!

The Story of My Life is an inspiring book that I think is an important book for anyone to read. Helen Keller faced huge challenges in her life as a result of an illness that left her both deaf and blind when she was only 3 years old. She was surrounded by family and friends who helped her find a teacher, Anne Sullivan, who helped her achieve the goals of learning about the world around her and most importantly learning to read and write. I learned so many interesting facts about the experience of being deaf and blind and I am fascinated by her perseverance and her capabilities. I definitely recommend this book!
