Publisher's summary

After a devastating war decimated most of the world, Hudson Lane has known only the oppressive life under her own father's tyranny. She finally escapes, branding herself an outlaw and hunted by the Enforcers. Her best chance at survival is Connor Mackenzie, an aggressively sensual fugitive who opens her eyes to the wicked possibilities of a world without rules. As the leader of a band of outlaw fighters, Connor can't resist the beautiful stranger who asks for his protection. Despite his reservations, he agrees to introduce her to a whole new way of life. But when Connor discovers Hudson's connection to the enemies of liberty, he wonders how far he can trust the woman who has abandoned all inhibitions to challenge every forbidden desire.

First of a Series...

I don’t really have a lot to say about this book.
I liked the setting and the characters, I found my mind wandering a lot and it was hard to real myself back into the story.

I think because it’s a first book I tend to have this reaction unless the story really gets me. I didn’t have that happen with this one but it was still a good story. I think I need to keep listening to the series to really see if it was just this book or this series.

I loved the narration.

Guilty pleasures

I love pulpy post-apocalypse stories. I love feisty romances with alpha, but honorable, men. When the two are combined, it can double the pleasure. Here, I had a good time, but it felt like the book was divided into a 6 hour romance, followed by a 2.5 post-apocalypse story. The ingredients were all there but it didn’t quite come together right. And yet, this was a guilty pleasure that had me blushing even as I rolled my eyes. After I while my “good griefs” gave way to cheesy, sexy good times.

The things that were a little off:
-The sex to story ratio is actually a lot off. In this 8.5 hour book, there’s at least one per hour, starting at hour 1. The dirty deeds sizzle, all mouthy and dominant (but always consensual). It just drowned out everything else. You know when Sam I Am decides he likes green eggs and ham everywhere? Yes, they do like sex, in the bar, on the lawn, with two men… Yes, Sam I Am, I do like sex with my man!
I actually FFd thru a few.
-The ridiculously long time Hudson delays confessing to Connor, or telling him she’s solved a mystery.
-The narrator is great, except for Rylan’s accent. Oh, my ears! The accents during the kink … shudder.
-All the gender neutral MC names, especially for the h’s in each book (who all get introduced here).
Hudson, Rylan, Jamie, Lennox, Reese, Sloan… if you’re going to use names that can swing either way, then duet narration would really help to separate the fillies from the fellas.

Want even more kink, doms, and smutty-spectacle with your post-apocalypse romance?
Try Kit Rocha’s Beyond Series. That one goes “beyond” my kink tolerance more often than not, 😜
but it is well written if that’s your thing.

Want less sex and more sci-fi in your post-apocalypse romance?
Dustwalker flips the sex to story ratio and tells a powerful tale.

Good Premise kinda drowned out by hyper-sex!

2.75 Stars

After World War III and big earthquakes that drop the West Coast into Ocean, the remainder of civilization is divided into three camps. The oppressive communist styled totalitarian government, the good outlaws who want to live a free life and the evil bandits.

In the oppressive government cities, only certain people can have children and everything you do is controlled. The outlaws have their own camps and raid the government outposts for provisions. The bandits go after the weak and live by raping and pillaging.

The focus of the story is on the good outlaws who use their freedom to have orgies, three way sex and any other possible style of sex. Nothing is off-limits and no matter the situation, they will have sex, think about having sex or have angst filled moments about one person or another.

There is a story that could have been developed, especially if they took maybe 10% of the repetitive sex out and added a bit more to the story. Seeing that this is a trilogy that nothing has been added to in a few years, I hope that a resolution is reached as the actual premise has promise.

Has some Angst, but it wasn’t too much angst!

This series is set in a post nuclear war world. It’s a pretty ugly world where the population number is controlled by eliminating medical care in order for, “nature to take its coarse,”, allowing only the fittest to survive. The only people who have freedom of choice are the people who choose to live out of the system. This is where the Hero lives and where the Heroine escapes to,?when she decides she cannot live within the system anymore. However, she does not reveal her true past to the Hero and that is where all the angst is rooted. This book has a lot of action and violence but, the element that may offend some, is the very explicit sexual content. There is lots of public sex, voyeurism and ménage. If these things make you uncomfortable, you’ll want to choose another series. If you like your books hot and dirty, this book should trip your trigger.
