Publisher's summary

When two young Amish men find love, will they risk losing everything?

In a world where every detail of life - down to the width of a hat brim - is dictated by God and the all-powerful rules of the community, two men dare to imagine a different way. At 18, Isaac Byler knows little outside the strict Amish settlement of Zebulon, Minnesota, where there is no rumspringa for exploration beyond the boundaries of their insular world. Isaac knows he'll have to officially join the church and find a wife before too long, but he yearns for something else - something he can't name.

Dark tragedy has left carpenter David Lantz alone to support his mother and sisters, and he can't put off joining the church any longer. But when he takes on Isaac as an apprentice, their attraction grows amid the sweat and sawdust. David shares his sinful secrets, and he and Isaac struggle to reconcile their shocking desires with their commitment to faith, family, and community. Now that they've found each other, are they willing to lose it all?

Contains mature themes.

A must "read"

I've just finished my second listen through. I adore this series. It's well written, well read, and a nice break from the standard every other chapter switching of the usual romance format.

A delightful Runspringa

Excellent narrator. A delightful story about first love, coming out and choosing the life you want to live, against the odds.

Stolen moments...

3.5 Stars for the narrator. I like John Solo but sometimes he whispers too much and it is too low to hear what he is saying. He did this often in this book. I had to turn my radio up in my car multiple times because of it. I will credit him for me actually liking the story more. Through his narration, I was able to feel more emotionally when it was read to me rather than me reading on my own.

Giving the story 4 stars. Still hate the abrupt ending but that's what book 2 is for. 😆

Great trilogy

I realized that I really enjoy KA books, not a single one disappointed me.
I liked a lot this trilogy, with the second one being the most boring. Strength of Isaac and David, their love, but also their inner struggle kept me on the edge. I liked the end as well,it is hea, but realistic one for them and their families.
I have learned some details about Amish, that I didn't know before, which is additional plus.

amazing

It's review time 🎧
Warning ⚠️ : Amish religion, male to male love. A lot of s**
Narrator score🎧 ; I really love Jon solo I think she's work is marvelous and incredible and he managed surprise me in my opinion this was the best series that this narrator performed the characters and feelings... i just dont even. John was absalutly extraordinary.

Level of steam🔥: well as they apparently say, the deeper the denial the deeper the desire. It was hot super hot 🔥 those two experimented a lot with their bodies.

Level of anxiety and sadness0😱😢: i have to say it wasn't as terrible as I thought it would, I bought this series as soon as it came out on audible, but it took me a long would to listen to it because I wasn't in the mood to cry my soul out, and though I did cry in some parts of this trilogy, It wasn't as terrible as I thought it will be.

The book itself📖: wow , this author did an incredible research before she wrote the books, and you can see.
Both chapters were beautiful to me, I love them so much. And I will think about those books a lot after today.
Look, I admire this author, because homophobia is a subject that should be spoken about yet, unfortunately .
But it's more than that, she respected a whole community without being ethnocentric, and it's very important that she gave us the listeners/readers the opportunity to be in a world without judging it as a writer.

Great book, decent listen

I can't decide if I was more irritated by the simpering vocalization of the females or the fact that the German speaking Amish women all sounded like southern fainters.

A good book about dealing with shame

I got quickly absorbed into this story and finished the series within a week. The first thing that absorbed me was learning many things about the Amish I never knew before. Living in this religion seems extremely difficult and, to me, baffling and unappealing. However, the many Amish characters in the story are done well and shed light on why many of them want to stay. The harsh rules, especially around shunning the older brother, really stuck in my head and I thought a lot about this story when I wasn’t listening to it.

Both characters deal with shame throughout the whole series. I wanted to shout at them, “BUT THERE’S NOTHING WRONG WITH YOU” as they wrestled with shame. It occurred to me, though, I deal with shame in my life, obviously not stemming from Amish religious beliefs, but from other circumstances in my life. Despite having people want to shout at ME that there’s nothing wrong with me, this unhelpful shame is still an issue in my life. So it was actually helpful for me to see the two guys resolve their shame over the course of this three book series. It might be a little goofy to learn from characters in a random romance novel, but hey, I’ll take it.

As a heads up, there are a lot of really explicitly steamy scenes in this book. Which might be your thing - if so - enjoy! I’m down for a few such scenes, but once these two guys got going, at times the first book seemed like erotica rather than a romance novel. Not the end of the world, but not exactly my taste, and the narrator was a bit over enthusiastic in these scenes. Again, depending on what you are looking for in a book, this abundance of sexy time might be a good thing, but maybe be careful when listening to this in your car with the windows open. ;-)
