Publisher's summary

From New York Times best-selling author Penelope Ward, comes a new standalone novel.

It was the summer of my life.
I’d met the guy of my dreams.
Unfortunately, he was the son of my uppity employer - and very much off-limits.
But Gavin was a rebel. He knew his mother would disown him if she found out about us; in his
eyes, we just had to be careful.
He never treated me as his mother did - like hired help.
Instead, Gavin put me on a pedestal and loved me harder than I’d ever been loved in my life.

What a summer it was.
Until it all ended - badly.

I was never supposed to see Gavin again.
That didn’t stop me from thinking about him every day for 10 years.
I knew little about his life now, just that he was an entrepreneur living an ocean away.

When a twist of fate had me working again in the very place our love affair started a decade earlier,
I knew it was only a matter of time before I might see him again.
But I wasn’t prepared.
What if he hated me?
What if he loved someone else now?
I wasn’t prepared for all the unknowns.

And most of all, I wasn’t prepared for today to be the day he came back.

5 CONFLICTED STARS!

I am conflicted because I liked the story very much, but there were too many heart wrenching moments that left me emotionally drained.

I do not like feeling like that after reading my romance stories, specially after the “Happily Ever After” finally arrives, and you are overwhelmed and unable to shake the sad/frustrating feelings from the previous dramas/conflicts.

It also brings to the fore so many conflicted feelings to those of us who have lived through a loved one’s dementia.

Andy Arndt and Sebastian York are always amazing performers and they didn’t disappoint.

Recommended listen even if it leaves you emotionally drained.

ABSOLUTELY AWESOME!!!!!!!!!

One of the best books I have ever read!!! I listened to this audiobook in one day. A day, I might add, where I had to work my 8 hour shift, but managed to listen as much as possible while on breaks, etc. As soon as my work day was done, I put my ear buds in and spent the rest of my night listening until I heard the entire book. Something I don't normally do. But this book absolutely captivated me. And the narration by Andi Arndt and Sebastian York (two of my favorite narrators by the way) made it all that much better. Great job everyone!!! This is truly one of my favorite books ever!!!!

This book has left me emotionally spent.

I’m a sucker for a good second chance romance and this book didn’t disappoint. Ward brought all the feels with this story. I LOVED Gavin and Raven and my heart ached so hard for them as I read. They had so many obstacles in their way and I just wanted everything to work out for them in the end. I’ve been a long time reader of Penelope Ward and her writing is always on point. Ward manages to take a trope that has been done before and it gives a distinctive touch and creates a book that will stay with you for a long time.

Audio Review:
I listened to the audio version of this story as well and the narrators knocked it out of the park. I feel like I say that for every book they work on but its true. This book was on the heavier side and you could feel the raw emotions from them as they performed certain scenes. York and Arndt really took this audiobook to the next level and I highly recommend listening to this audiobook.

Love Love Love!!

Penelope Ward has done it again!! I dont think that there have been a book of hers that I didn't absolutely love!! The Day He Came Back was funny, emotional, happy, and sad. I fell in love with Gavin. He was such a wonderful caring guy. Raven was such a sweet girl with a huge heart for those she cares about. This book spans 10 years, the majority being a crap hand at the doing of someone who should have shown support. The ending was amazing!! A definite must-read in my opinion.

The narration was done by the amazing Andi Arndt and Sebastian York. The really make this story come to life. You really feel as if you are a character in the story!!

5 amazing stars!!!

Love Lost and Found

I can't say enough good things about The Day He Came Back! Every time i think that I've read the best book by Penelope Ward, she manages to top it! Raven and her mother worked for the Morgans in Palm Beach Florida. They were a well to do family with two boys in boarding school. Raven met the sons when they came home from England on summer break, The two couldn't have been more different. Weldon the younger brother, was annoying and entitled. While Gavin the older brother, was funny, kind and gorgeous. Raven and Gavin became close right away, much to his Mother's dismay! She did not want her sons involved with the "help". Raven and Gavin still managed to find time to be together. One weekend, when Gavin's parents and brother were off on a college visit he persuaded Raven to spend the weekend with him. It was magical until Gavin's Dad came home unexpectedly. Thank goodness his mother wasn't with him. They were more careful, but things took a terrible turn for the worse! Raven's Mom was diagnosed with breast cancer., and had no health insurance. Mr. Morgan volunteered to t pay her hospital bills because he was so fond of her. Gavin's mother found out about it, and threatened Raven that she would cut off all help if Raven did not stop seeing Gavin immediately! A brokenhearted Raven had no choice but to comply and broke up with him by text! Gavin was blindsided, He had fallen in love with Raven, but she was adamant and would not talk to him. This is a story of deep heartache, loss and ironic twists of fate. Do not miss this book! As usual, Andie and Sebastian were superb as narrators!

First Love

This book brought back those feelings of one’s first love and how sweet and innocent yet true to time it can and should be. Refreshing in the fact that sex wasn’t the main subject! Family, friendship, true love...these are the main topics. I finished this in two days, this book definitely gets you caught up in its web! Enjoy!

Loved This Book

I loved every minute of this book. I loved how they got back together. The brother turned his life around and that she got to repay his dad for helping her mom. Now I want a sequel about the brothers life and how he has changed. Amazing

My new favorite Penelope Ward audio

Penelope Ward never disappoints and always sets the bar higher every time. It is stories like these that hooked me into the world of romance and make being a devout fan so easy. The way the characters are so well developed, the chemistry and the tension is on point and the highlight for me is simply the way the story is crafted. You go into the past for the first half of the story, as to give you enough depth and perspective and when you come to the present you can't help but be totally engaged to the point it's difficult to stop. Andi Arndt and Sebastian York are perfection, as always, but they manage to bring a level of vulnerability to the performance that is essential in keeping these characters real in the mind of the listener. Easily a new favorite for me this year!!!

Predictable

I usually enjoy Penelope Ward books, but this one was very predictable and I just couldn’t get into it. I didn’t find the story engaging or interesting, it’s just felt like all her previous work. Just a bit of a plot change and new characters, and nothing more.
