Sheltered and coddled - a gentle protector romance

This book is for folks looking for 90% female narration of a story about a needy doormat. After the opening chapter, where Evie witnesses executions and agrees to become Matteo’s wife, the rest of the story is a dull story of fragile Evie as a kept woman. He guards her like his prized pet, is endlessly patient and gentle with her. What’s there to like about Evie other than she makes cookies for him? She has no smarts or courage or personality.

Throughout the book, nothing happens except endless scenes of her being guarded, her foolishly leaving her guards, and him constantly reminding her she needs to be guarded. In between all that guarding, he calls her “my wife” a lot (because finding an original pet name is apparently too much for him) and they have dull sex.

This isn’t a mafia, or even a mafia-lite, romance. There’s no business or criminal enterprise. It’s a nonsensical plot about him as a leader of a group that goes around killing people who deserve it. You just need to go with it and pretend he’s a gentleman killer and don’t look for any of this to make sense.

Lots of Control….and whining

There were really two themes here: H control of h, and then the story itself, which was interesting enough … but I really need to check the narrators first. Their skills definitely impact the story, and almost every sentence from Maxine Mitchell sounds like she is either about to burst into tears - or about to have a whine fest. Conversely, John Lane’s voice was spot on - and convincingly controlling. Bottom line, the story was OK - and John Lane’s voice helps to compensate for Maxine Mitchell’s.

Matteo was great!

Even though Matteo was a hard@ss, he was great. From when Evie witnessed him commit a crime, her life changed for the better. It was kind of like Robin Hood. He was tough on Evie for her own protection in the rough world he was in but he ends up really loving her. There is an evil villain who tries to get to him through Evie. This book had a really nice ending and I am looking forward to the next one in the series, which I hope comes to Audible soon. Maxine Mitchell and John Lane did a great job with the narration although I felt John sounded a little old for Matteo.

Great start

Was a great beginning, even the slow working out the relationship. Then the h got just plane stupid. Over and over she is shown and Knows the dangers, and still has to play dumb . He even explains about his sister and his fear , still she blows it off. One would think with her back ground she would be more careful and listen .loved the story but the angst and drama over and over and over the same issue ruined it for me. not worth the credit

enjoyed the actors except it was more her very little of the male actor .

A Masterpiece from Beginning to End

If you are looking for a sticky and sweet, hearts and flowers story, this is not the audiobook for you. But if you want an emotional journey filled with murder, control and mayhem than look no further. Melanie Moreland takes her listeners on a wild ride. This is not your customary Moreland story but this proves that she can just story tell in any capacity. Matteo and Evie's story starts off with danger and ends with a storyline that will hook the reader in and not let them go. The only bad part was that it ended too quickly. Maxine Mitchell and John Lane were outstanding as narrators, actually drawing the listener into the story. A masterpiece from beginning to end.

I read all of the books in the series. I was not disappointed. Evie was so brave and Mateo was so strong and sexy.

Thrilling start to the series!

What a thrilling start to this series! “The Boss” is an action packed, steamy, and a rollercoaster of emotions romantic suspense story that was great the whole way through.

After escaping her abusive boyfriend, Evie is 100% on her own. She’s in the wrong part of town and stumbles into a warehouse to take cover. And then Evie witnesses a crime no one was meant to see. Matteo is the head of an organization that goes after the bad guys the government won’t touch. To protect himself, the organization and Evie… Matteo marries her. But there is something between the two despite not knowing each other.

I started this series in the middle and I’m so glad to be able to go back to the beginning. Each book is a standalone so I never felt lost. I loved how powerful Matteo is. I could feel it as I listened and he was made to be the boss. But he’s also kind and gentle with Evie, especially after all the horrific things she went through. Evie in the beginning broke my heart. She was so broken and was determined to never go through that again, even if that meant taking her own life. But the strength she had all along was there and Matteo was there to help her find it again. This was a great introduction to the series and one not to be missed.

John Lane and Maxine Mitchell were great as Matteo and Evie. John’s accent for Matteo, which had some Italian in it, was great and I loved listening to him bring this protector to life. Maxine was flawless as usual and her performance as the strong and emotional Evie was amazing.

Mafia-lite

For some reason, when I picked this up, I thought Boss was regarding a CEO-type. I was excited to see that it was actually of the mafia variety. But even with that, it wasn't what I needed it to be. He was too soft, and it all just fell flat for me. There were a couple of side characters that I might be interested in reading about, but none that make me want to immediately dive in.
