Publisher's summary

A Wall Street Journal bestseller.

Danger rises and love is threatened in New York Times bestselling author Susan Stoker’s fourth book of the Mountain Mercenaries series.

Lowell “Black” Lockard, former Navy SEAL, has watched his fellow Mountain Mercenaries settle down with the women of their dreams, but he’s convinced he doesn’t need love. Then he gets a call from Harlow Reese - a chef at a local women’s shelter - and begins to reconsider his decision.

After being continually harassed by a local band of punks, Harlow asks Lowell to give the women of the shelter lessons in self-defense. She doesn’t expect him to take such a special interest in her safety, but he insists on escorting her to and from work, never taking no for an answer. Not that Harlow minds the personal touch...especially when it’s coming from her former teenage crush.

Despite her long history of bad dating luck, seeing Black again makes Harlow rethink her self-imposed celibacy. Easy on the eyes and hard to forget, the man has morphed into an alpha stud. And Harlow may be exactly the type of woman Black is looking for. Making her feel safe isn’t only a duty; it’s a pleasure. But the threats are escalating. The motives are a mystery. And as the danger burns almost as hot as their passion, there’s much more at risk than their hearts.

Great addition

I love this series. Black and Harlow didn’t disappoint as the next mercenary to fins his One. I appreciate the author giving us vulnerability yet strength and maturity in Harlow. None of the immature running and hiding or feeling or emotions. Yet, there is plenty of action to keep us interested. I can’t wait to see Ball fall for his One.

Black and Harlow are an amazing couple!

Defending Harlow is the fourth book in the Mountain Mercenaries series by Susan Stoker. Narrated by Stella Bloom, the story reconnects high school friends in a dangerous and suspenseful situation, and I really like Harlow and Black as a couple. Black is not your typical mercenary book boyfriend at only 5'9", but what he lacks in stature, he more than makes up for in strength, determination, and heart. He and Harlow complement each other well, and Harlow finds an inner strength she didn't know she had. I really love the undertone of body positivity here - not just with Black, but with the gorgeously full-figured Harlow.

Fun story

Was so interesting that this one took place in a womens shelter. Happy that Harlow was not athletic as it's nice for a change for the heroine to not be "perfect". Black has his work cut out for him in getting her to date him. Always nice to hear about previous characters.

Loved the story

Great story. Great narration. Great action in the story. Harlow's worst dates are hilarious and definitely a woman's worst nightmares.

Black and Harlow

I found this series last year when I had a promotion period of Kindle Unlimited and I have been following it ever since. I love everything about the Mountain Mercenaries men, the fact that they all have jobs but are a part of a group of men who take missions to rescue women and children that have gone missing. In the previous books the men have fallen in love with the women they were rescuing so it was a nice change that this one didn’t involve a mission per say. Harlow is one of the cooks at a women’s shelter that the men help out and since she knows Black from high school, she contacts him about a problem with some local men harassing the women and kids around the shelter. We get to see the men doing their thing and trying to track down who is targeting the shelter while we also get to see more into the personal lives of them all, but especially Black. It’s entertaining to watch him try to date Harlow without actually calling it dating…. Which is understandable after hearing about all of her horror story dates. That was probably one of the most entertaining aspects, she really did have horrible luck with men and I couldn’t help but laugh at a bunch of her dating experiences! This book did leave me more curious about the mysterious Rex, I can’t wait to get his story! I will say I am compiling a list of suspicions about what will happen with him!

Stella Bloom did a wonderful job narrating this book. She does great jobs for both the male and female characters. There is such a good voice change for all the Mount Mercenary men that it was easy to tell who was talking. The fact that she could even perfect Rex’s robotic voice it a huge plus!

Kind of a different Mountain Mercenaries story

This one centers around a shelter in Colorado springs. Harlow is the chef in a women's shelter, and the Mountain Mercenaries take turns teaching self defense. Black and Harlow knew each other in high school. As a campaign of harassment plagues the shelter, Black and his team struggle to keep Harlow and the other women safe. In the process, Black and Harlow discover true love!

Love that sneaky Black!

Another great story in this series! I loved how sneaky Black was with his non-dating dates. These two have a slow romance with the chance of danger but dont know from where. It was wonderful watching these two cone together. I listened to this on audio. Stella Bloom does a nice job on the narration.

Wonderful Story

Susan Stoker is one of my very favorite authors!!! Each of her stories is as good as the last if not even better! This was a fabulous story with another very special love story as a part of it. Stella Bloom is a top notch narrator who always does a fabulous job. I will continue enjoying their delivery until there are no more to love. Thank you both of you.

Good romantic drama

I like this series of books however, the mercenaries are not that bright. Each one that I listen to I think yo myself why are they avoiding the obvious? I do think the romance is good and each involves real life situations.

A nice slow love story

The two main characters knew each other years before and now the relationship is being rekindled. This story is filled to the brim with humorous date disasters stories and some unique original first dates ideas. The villain is just a greedy creep.
