Publisher's summary

When a palace maid is attacked, Josie and the captain of the guards investigate together. Since one of the suspects is a foreign diplomat and magic expert, they use the opportunity to learn more about sorcery. But it soon becomes clear that he is using them to get to the truth about the palace and the servants' origins.

With unrest in the village, and servants growing impatient for answers, an undercurrent of danger pervades the air. But the most dangerous man of all may prove to be the king himself, because every clue points to him knowing more than he lets on.

As tensions both in and out of the glittering Glancian court rise, the heat between the captain and Josie is a distraction. But is it a welcome one?

Excellent story except....

I really did love this story with one exception. I did not enjoy the use of the “f” word in many places. I’ve read another series by this author that leaves this expletive out. The authors characters are always interesting and believable. I read reviews by many to try and determine if there was use of this type of language. I wish audible would give some kind of rating or forewarning for those of us who choose not to include in our reading experience.

An excellent story filled with secrets and more

A lot of secrets, interesting characters that only get deeper and more interesting as the story continues.
Highly recommend it.
I am a fan of CJ Archer but I think this series is her best work yet

Even better than the first book in the series!

It says a lot when the second book in a series is even better than the first (which I enjoyed a lot). The main characters and the side characters are all very well done and not just two dimensional. I really can't wait for the next book to come out. The narration was once again awesome with really good male and female voices.

The stroy is interesting but,

I feel a little cheated, the story seems fine, but it is more of a part than a stand alone book. I love series in general, but this doesn't feel like a series, again just part of a larger book.

rape warning

I am disappointed that CJ used rape as the mystery to solve. The maid is not just attacked or assaulted. She was raped and fearful of pregnancy. I will be returning this book.
Rape is not for entertainment.

Meh…

Interesting concept for the series but it moves too slowly. Im starting to feel that it really ought to be one book and that this is a money making ploy. I’m not sure it’s worth the $ / credits to finish.

Extremely slow storyline

Are we really expected to get to book 6? I thought maybe the first book was drawn out to give a good baseline for the rest of the story, but I just finished book 2 and this is getting ridiculous! It’s frustrating because the story does have potential, but not enough of the characters are fleshed out to keep the reader interested. The author spends most of the time focused on subplots instead of the meat and potatoes of the story. Maybe it’s the author’s style, but it really feels like a money grab at this point. Maybe book 3 is the turning point, but I don’t know if I have another 10 hours to spare for fluff.
