Publisher's summary

The Broken trilogy continues here....

Bullets fly during a dangerous mission, and Major Mark Lopez is critically injured....

A Blackstone soldier, Mark is transferred to the North Dakota hospital with the security clearance to treat members of the elite covert team.

The pretty new nurse assigned to his case knows her stuff, but Mark soon discovers she knows more than just how to save lives. Mia Harper knows the Blackstone Code.

Mia is a bit of gypsy and doesn’t engage much with people - but there’s something about her mysterious new patient....

After Mark recovers from surgery, he is discharged from the hospital with orders to rest; not that he does. Instead, he rushes to Mexico for the team’s next assignment. But when he returns to the hospital again and again with minor - and not-so-minor - injuries, Mia suspects he’s only coming to see her.

Romance ignites, and because Mia signed a nondisclosure agreement at the hospital, Mark is able to open up more with Mia than any other woman.

Some debts demand payment in either cash or blood....

When someone from Mark’s past comes to him for help, old secrets start to resurface, and more blood is shed. Worlds collide, and lies are exposed in an all-or-nothing underground poker game.

Mark must put his life on the line to keep Mia safe...and to finally learn the answer to the question that’s haunted him his whole life.

What really happened that night 25 years ago?

This is an ok book. Certainly not the same quality that the initial series has. It's missing parts, But an ok listen.

Great story, terrible naration

Loved the story, but the robotic narration spoiled it. Wish I rather spent my money on the book and not the audio book.

Mark & Mia

▪▪▪Review contains spoilers▪▪▪

Audible Escapes review. 3 POV (Mark, Mia & Manuel). This is the first book of 4 in the Blackstone series but follows the Broken Trilogy. Because this isn't technically the beginning of this author's "world" there are a lot of details that are left out & create a ton of questions about Mark's job. Narrators do a great job. Trigger warnings: mention of a previous captive situation, miscarriage, beheading, accusations that Mark murdered his mom when he was 7, gambling, military deaths, murders.

**uncertain of the spelling of character names**

Major Marcus Carter Lopez (30, aka Mark) is Army special forces but it isn't clear if he is still in the military or who he actually works for. The men with Mark when he's shot: Colonel Cole Logan was apparently taken captive in another book, is married to Savannah (miscarried their first child), and has a daughter named Olivia; Henry Paul (33; succumbed to his gunshot wound to the chest); John; Agent Keith. This is his 3rd gunshot in the past 5 years. Can speak 5 languages & read lips. He had an older brother by 7 years named Manuel who is constantly blackmailing him over the death of their mom.

Mia Harper (30; aka my little icicle) is a nurse on duty when Mark is taken to be treated for his gunshot wound. She's working for 2 months in a North Dakota Hospita, was born & raised in Arizona, lived to California, her brother's name is Ray (military - injured, he was sent home early from Afghanistan). The reason she's working in ND is her 15 year old patient Kenny. Kenny was her best friend's son and she promised to look after him when she died. Unfortunately he is in the custody of his uncle and is gravely ill.

The story starts with Mark as a hungry 7 year old with a passed out abusive mom. She forced him to beg for food, while begging Abigail helps him and after his mom's death she adopts him. Through the story it's revealed that Manuel killed their mom because she was abusive, neglectful & her boyfriends abused Manuel. Manuel is so full of hurt that he & his friend Noah killed her, he is so jealous of Mark Manuel convinced Mark he had done it. Manuel continues to hold their mom's death over Mark until he reveals the truth before Noah kills Manuel. Manuel owed a large gambling debt to Noah and was using Mia to force Mark to gamble for them in hopes that they could win his money back. Noah had attacked & threatened Mia which forced Mark to take her to his company's safe house which is where her secret is revealed. Her father is actually their boss. Feeling betrayed by her secret he tells her to leave, her father takes her home and she transfers to a hospital in Boston. They eventually get back together but aren't engaged at the end of the book. Mia and Mark

A thrilling, intriguing, and swoon worthy story. This is Mia and Mark's story, I enjoyed their banter, their undeniable chemistry, and the drama that came along with them. I liked this story.

HONOR

I REALLY LOVED THIS STORY. IT WAS EXCITING AND REALLY KEPT ME ENTRANCED IN THE STORY. I DON'T NORMALLY PICK THIS KIND OF STORY BUT IT HOOKED ME FROM BEGINNING TO END. THE NARRATORS WERE BOTH EXCELLENT., AND THEY REALLY KEPT MY INTEREST PEEKED. OVERALL THIS STORY WAS A SAD ONE. I COULDN'T BELIEVE ALL THE HELL MARK HAD GONE THROUGH AS A CHILD. BUT THANK GOD HE MET LOVE OF HIS LIFE

Poor narration

The male narrator does a very poor job. This is supposed to be a special forces officer and he sounds as if he has a mental disability. Speach is slow and uneven. Really need a new narrator!

Mia and Mark

Wow I did not immediately make the connection to the previous series but once I did I was all grins because I loved that series. These two characters were destined to be together. She is a nurse and he is a soldier with a team that seems to go to the hospital a lot. This story got me from the beginning with a little boy who was always hungry. I loved this story and narration.
