Story
It's been said that all great literature boils down to one of two stories—a man takes a journey, or a stranger comes to town. While mystery writers have been successfully using both approaches for generations, there's something undeniably alluring in the nature of a stranger: the uninvited guest, the unacquainted neighbor, the fish out of water. In the newest collection of stories by the Mystery Writers of America, each author weaves a fresh tale surrounding the eerie feeling that comes when a stranger enters our midst, featuring stories by prolific mystery writers.

Story
Astrid Bell has known most of her roommates for years, but while they have a history together - romantic pairings, one-night stands, friendships - each of them also has a past. Astrid is on her way home one day when her neighbor knocks her off her bike. Seeing she is bruised but not broken, her roommates help her home. The next day, they learn that same neighbor was beaten to death hours later. Each of them tells the police what they know and are dismissed - until Astrid stumbles over another body.

In 1995, six university students moved into the house at 215 Caldwell Street. Months later, one of them was found dead on the sofa the morning after their end-of-year party. His death was ruled an accident by the police. The remaining five all knew it wasn’t, and though they went on with their lives, the truth of what happened to their sixth housemate couldn’t stay buried forever. Twenty years later, all five of them arrive - lured separately under various pretenses - at Wolfheather House, a crumbling, secluded mansion on the Scottish isle of Doon.

Secrets and lies can’t stay buried forever in Cedar Valley. In the summer, hikers and campers pack the small Colorado town’s meadows and fields. And in the winter, skiers and snowboarders take over the mountains. Season by season, year after year, time passes, and the lies, like the aspens and evergreens that surround the town, take root and spread deep. Death is a topic Bradford Douglas is intimately familiar with. The young attorney is on a crusade against capital punishment. He’s saved a number of death row inmates, but none of his cases has been as tough as the one he now faces: Henry Combs, a vicious serial killer, has only hours to live when Douglas is summoned for a Hail Mary attempt to have the man’s sentence commuted to life imprisonment. Definitely a bell curve
Some of the stories were amazing (the bully, the new lad, and the pitcher are my top 3 favorite), some of them were terrible (booty and the beast being my least favorite), most were average. Fairly entertaining overall. Since every chapter/story had a different narrator, it's hard to review each of them, but overall I don't have any complaints. I would recommend not falling asleep while listening though because I had more than a few odd dreams take place haha

Some were great, some were okay, one was awful
All performances were good and some of the stories were very good, a few were okay and I absolutely cannot fathom how “Booty and the Beast” made the cut. I know it was supposed to be crude but the writing and story were also terrible. Otherwise, the other stories are worth a listen.

Wide variety of stories, quick enjoyable listen
I mostly enjoyed these stories except for a few that didn't have any real story or meaningful ending. The majority of them had very good endings that you don't see coming.
They were quick listens. Easy to get though without heaviness and commitment of regular lensth stories. Great for the car. The narration was fantastic for every story. It's mostly British and Scottish accents throughout with all their unique words and sayings, which I find fascinating, so Was thrilled.

Dark and twisted short stories
These are a collection of dark and twisted short mystery stories. Some I enjoyed more that others. A few I had a tough time with keeping my attention enough to know what the story was about. Maybe this would have been better if I'd read rather than listened to the stories.
