Publisher's summary

Though Magnus MacLeish and Lark MacDougall grew up on the same castle grounds, Magnus is now laird of the great house and the Isle of Kerrera. Lark is but the keeper of his bees and the woman he is hoping will provide a tincture that might help his ailing wife conceive and bear him an heir. But when his wife dies suddenly, Magnus and Lark find themselves caught up in a whirlwind of accusations, expelled from their beloved island, and sold as indentured servants across the Atlantic.

Yet even when all hope seems dashed against the rocky coastline of the Virginia colony, it may be that in this New World, the two of them could make a new beginning - together.

Laura Frantz's prose sparkles with authenticity and deep feeling as she digs into her own family history to share this breathless tale of love, exile, and courage in Colonial America.

Beautiful, Heart-wrenching, Dramatic

The narration of this beautiful, heart-wrenching story was magnificent!
Truly a dramatic tale, filled with breathtaking scenery from Scottish Isles to the Virginia Colonies and Jamaica.
Having grown up together and being schooled together despite the differences in station Lark and Laird Magnus first share a deep friendship. When tragedy strikes Lady Isla, wife of Magnus, Lark and Magnus find their lives forever changed.
Magnus is able to use his ties with a powerful friend to make things a little better for them both but they are still to be indentured servants to the man. There is so much more I wish I could say but I don't know how without giving spoilers.
The only reason this isn't a 5-star book for me was the ending. It was over too soon, I want to know more.

2nd time listening, still great

Such a lovely story. I listened to it as if it was my first time. I’m sure it won’t be my last. Narrator did such a wonderful job. Listening to her is better than watching tv. Of course I have to give thanks to the author Mrs. Laura Frantz. Thank you for your imagination in creating such great novels. Keep it coming.

It was fine.

This was a lot of woe, and not a lot of excitement. While I appreciated the occasional message of faith, I found certain parts/characters completely unnecessary. I’m wondering if there will be a sequel to answer some unanswered questions, and stabilize things a bit in my mind. All in all, it’s a slow build but has its moments.

Immersive experience! Enthralling Story!

My first read of 2024 and an automatic favorite. From the cliffs of Scotland to the stormy seas of the Atlantic to the Virginia Colony, nothing screams my favorite setting louder. And the narration by Aimee Lilly is easily the best I've ever heard!

Franz's beautiful prose and exquisite imagery had me in the pages. I could not put this one down. What a beautiful tale of love, patience, God's grace and faithfulness. His goodness is in each chapter and the Gospel is clearly stated.

Not only do I adore Lark and Magnus, but the supporting characters are such real and (mostly) loveable friends!

This was my first Laura Franz book and will certainly not be my last. I loved that she pulled from her own family tree for this and made the story so much more enthralling, if even possible! Would ABSOLUTELY love a Novella or more of the journey.

I HIGHLY recommend reading it along with listening to the audio book with Aimee Lilly- truly an immersive experience!

Incredible narrator

This is a sweet story, somewhat predictable, but pleasant, full of The Word, and nice.
The narration, however, was absolutely incredible! I will immediately look for other books narrated by Aimee Lilly.

Am I missing chapters??

Everybody that knows me knows that I love books by Laura Frantz. Her books have a wonderful mix of faith, history with a sweet love story. I especially love listening to her books because she always has wonderful narrators who add dimension to her stories. (Bravo Ms Lilly!) This book, I have to admit, left me baffled. The beginning and middle had me engaged and thoroughly enjoying the story. It weaved a lovely tale filled with Scottish and Virginia history and an endearing love story that was built on faith. 🙏

Sadly, the ending was abrupt. It was the oddest thing! You should have seen me.....I was listening on my Ipod....It ended and I actually went to the download to double check because I thought it was missing chapters. I couldn't believe it. It just ended! (Like someone just thru cold water in my face!). Did you ever have a wonderful dream that took you on a great journey......then you abruptly wake up only to be mad because the dream didn't finish? Well, that is what I felt with this book! 😭

Ms. Frantz, I hope this book is the beginning of a series because you can't leave it like this!! This story deserves more. Your readers deserve more. I need to wake up from my dream satisfied!! Please!! 😃
