Summary

The enthralling life story of the legendary DJ Norman Jay MBE.

Mister Good Times is the enthralling story of a black kid growing up in a (largely white) working class world; of vivid, often violent experiences on the football terraces; of the emerging club scene growing out of a melting pot of styles; of how Jay, with his contemporaries, took the music of black America, gave it a distinctly London twist and used the marriage of styles to forge a hugely successful career as a trailblazing DJ and broadcaster, becoming an inspiration to a whole generation of dance music fans, black and white, without ever compromising his integrity.

Along the way are tales of adventures across the country following Spurs; of Northern Soul nights, warehouse parties and illegal raves; of sound systems, the good and bad times of the Notting Hill carnival, the heady days of pirate radio, Rare Groove and the burgeoning British dance music scene.

Mister Good Times is the story of a man who has lived his life on his own terms, helping to define a new British culture.

Entertaining

I knew nothing about Norman Jay before listening to this book. The first half of the book was really interesting - talking about his first experiences with music, football, clothes, clubs etc. it really captures the essence of youth.

When it comes to the later years it’s a bit tedious, with a seemingly endless list of warehouse parties which all blend in to one. It picks up towards the end though.

Overall, I enjoyed this book though and would recommend it if you have an interest in music or 70s fashion.

A bit hypocritical

What a total hypocrite this guy is. Bangs on for chapters about black culture and racism but readily accepts an MBE.

Great view of an interesting time and person

I was a bit unsure when I downloaded this book, but it was well constructed and narrated.
Personally I could relate to much of the content probably because I had followed a similar lifestyle during the same period.

Well written and read

Written in a really natural way and read just like you're being told the story with wit and feel. A number of laughs whilst walking along listening to it, which is always a good sign in an autobiography. Tho I'm a bit younger and from a different part of London, it also brought back memories from overlapping experiences. Thoroughly enjoyed it.
