Publisher's summary

Lord Jasen of Grumhul, an impoverished young nobleman, has come to the Draelands to find a rich husband to help pay his father's debts. To the shock of everyone, he ends up attracting the attention of King Rilvor himself and the dragons who control the magic in the land.

Becoming royalty wasn't something Jasen either expected or wanted, but he can't control his growing feelings for the kind and handsome king. Scheming factions at Court conspire to keep him from Rilvor's side, and now, Jasen has to decide if the chance at true love with Rilvor is worth the burden of being the husband of a king.

Not Recommended

Leveraging the notion of dragons in the title and then barely involving them in any significant way and when they are, it is very superficial and very short-lived is very disappointing and deceptive. Sexual activity is alluded to, but never really happens, strike two. Mostly a lot of shallow back-biting adults, none of whom are special and common in such stories, strike three. Not recommended.

AbFan!

Absolutely Fantastic, that is!
I love fantasy and this story brought a new world to light. As much as I love the occasional erotic love scene, I’m really glad this story wasn’t graphic in that sense. Instead, the lovely story carried the book.
Phillip Alces does his usual fantastic job of this performance as well. He is simply amazing!

Not as good as the 2014 novella

2.5 stars overall

I think it was the absolutely marvelous narrator, Philip Alces, who unwittingly helped highlight what's wrong with this expanded version of a favorite novella. In my review of the most recent version of the ebook, I quoted fellow Goodreads reviewer Cleo who put one of my strongest issues with this longer version into a better synopsis than I could muster: “I felt like the MC turned into a completely useless Disney princess type character - honest, beautiful, trusting, and with less sense of self preservation than one of my houseplants.” Where was this guy's backbone? I can't remember the last time I rolled my eyes so much and was this disgusted with a protagonist who truly was a gutless wonder. As I said in my review of the expanded book, I did NOT feel this way with the 2014 novella.

Philip Alces really impresses!

First let me say, that I will absolutely be looking for this author in the future and second, that I had no idea Philip Alces had that accent (his own? Dunno... but it was wonderful!)

However, I didn’t love this story.

I did love the premise – Cinderella with dragons. I didn’t love that Jasen was a “slut” before we got to meet Rilvor and the steam factor in this is so low. Maybe that’s hypocritical – but my own taste would have been keep to one theme or the other. Keep Jasen and the sex scenes chaste or give us some hot smexy times!

I never read the “short version” and only listened to this, so I can’t compare, but I really do wish we’d seen more from Rilvor’s POV. I also hope that , since so much time went into world building, we’ll see more from this world in the future.

The writing was really good and as far as I could tell so was the editing.

As I mentioned before Philip Alces nailed all the accents and really put the listener in a great frame to appreciate this story/time in place. The secondary characters were good, though some of them I knew better than the 2nd MC.

All in all I thoroughly enjoyed this and found myself happily listening without a desire to skip ahead. Well-done!

Very nicely done

Very nicely written and performed. I felt it a bit lacking in the physical romance portions. This is a very G rated novel based upon gay characters.

cliche and boring.

Have you ever wondered what it would be like if someone took a tired, hyper cliche "renaissance" inspired fantasy where the heroine's only redeeming qualities are not being an outright asshole and being pretty and make it gay? Then, you're in luck. this right here is every poorly constructed ren-fest fanfic with the gender swapped without ANY thought on what effect open homosexuality might have had on culture or the character's experience. literally just the pronouns swapped. Turn the royal court into an English boarding school to remove any complicated plot to get in the way, and insert all-powerful ghosts and dragons so the main character doesn't have to grow, figure anything out for themself, or even gain any basic life skills.

Suffice to say - I didn't like this book. I held on to the end because I liked the bisexual sidekick (who was way more compelling, self-actualized, and active in driving the story than the hero and all the other governing forces combined) and because the Narrator was fantastic. She deserved a better ending.

A sweet story with amazing narration

I absolutely loved the narration. I thought Philip Alces did a wonderful job with bringing the characters to life. I love the different voices for each character and thought he did a great job at bringing the emotions out at just the right moments.

The story overall was quite enjoyable and I love the world the author created. I did wish there was a little more interaction with the dragons, but that didn’t stop my enjoyment of the story. I was hooked from the very beginning all the way to the end. I found each character entertaining and each with their own personalities.

A delightful and heart warming story

First I will say what this isn't. It's not about shifters, there is no graphic sex and it's isn't boring.
What it is about is love acceptance, jealousy and understanding. About a king who has a connection to dragons to keep peace. Looking for a consort after the death of his wife. A boy who shouldn't be in the running but finds himself the object of desire by the king. It's about overcoming expectations and acceptance for what's in your heart.
I do recommend this book. I would consider it G or PG depending on how open you are. I would also say that it's can be considered YA because it doesn't get graphic with the one sex scene and there are no curse words. Sometimes it's nice just to read a good story without all the adult stuff.

Why didn't I listen to this sooner?

Every now and then you come across books that really surprises you. This is one of those times for me. Consorting with Dragons isn’t a new book. I’ve come across it many, many times before. Yet somehow I’ve always dismissed it, thinking it wasn’t my cup of tea. How wrong I was… What an adventure Sera Trevor and Philip Alces took me on. I don’t know what I expected but it sure wasn’t this beautiful Cinderfella tale about a king and a nobleman and a meddling dragon or two. I can’t really put my finger on exactly what made me fall for the book, I mean there weren’t any spectacular fights, flights or intrigues, and maybe that was it. It wasn’t overdone. It was just right.
