Publisher's summary

The McGunnegals are all strange, and it has been that way for generations. They are too strong, or too fast, or too smart, and odd things happened when they are around. The neighbors say they are witches or devils, or have been snatched by changelings. Mothers hold their children close when they walk by, fearing they might catch the McGunnegal strangeness. But misfortune besets them when their mother, Ellie, disappears, followed by their crazy grandfather, but not before he reveals a family secret to Colleen and Frederick - a secret that reveals the source of their strangeness, and also threatens to cast the dark shadow of famine on Ireland. He has opened a portal to the world of the Others, where their mother has gone, and a dark creature - a goblin - has come in her place and is spreading death and disease. They fall through this portal, and find this strange land filled with dark creatures that are crushing its people and now threaten to come through the portal and take up their abode in the world of Men, as they once did long ago. Yet in this dark world of oppression, this poor family discovers who they are, and also what it means to be truly human.

Book is AMAZING

I wish the narrator didn’t do “voices” but that’s ok. The story is soooooo good, you will def be hooked. Reminds me of CS Lewis, Harry Potter and the hobbit mixed into one. Def good for ALL ages. I could listen to this with my children or my grandparents and know we would all enjoy it together

Slow start

It was a bit slow to start with so many characters. Once the plot was set, it ‘s very twisting because of so many secret identities .

Pure fun

This was a great book for my 8 year old daughter and I to listen to together. It was not disturbing, but was a fun, clean adventure. She looked for times to listen while we walked the dog or drove to extracurricular activities. I enjoyed her enthusiasm for the story that kept us feeling adventurous together. We look forward to the next book in the series!

Don't bother

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

I can't imagine. I may be. In a mood but this book, the story and the obnoxious accents irritated me to the point I could not get past the second chapter. It was that bad! I would have immediately returned it but it was too much trouble at the time.

What was most disappointing about Ben Anderson’s story?

EVERYTHING

Would you be willing to try another one of Jannie Meisberger’s performances?

NO

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

Do you need to ask?
