Publisher's summary

Orange Is the New Black meets Jennifer Probst's New York Times best-selling Marriage to a Billionaire trilogy, featuring a strong-minded prison tutor who discovers that her sexy bad-boy student is far more than he appears to be.

Haunted by nightmares of her father's street murder 15 years ago, Kat Lane decides to face her fears and uphold his legacy of helping others by teaching inmates at a New York prison. There she meets arrogant Wesley Carter, who's as handsome as he is dangerous, as mysterious as he is quick witted, and with a reputation that ensures people will keep their distance.

As teacher and student, Kat and Carter are forced to leave their animosities at the door and learn that one should never judge a book by its cover. As Carter's barriers begin to crumble, Kat realizes there's much more to her angry student than she thought, leaving them to face a new, perilous obstacle: their undeniable attraction to one another.

When Carter is released and Kat continues to tutor him on the outside, the obstacles mount. Can they fight the odds to make their relationship work? Will Kat's family and friends ever accept her being with someone of his background? And will Kat's discovery of Carter's role on the night her father died force them apart forever...or unite them?

Terrible and so predictable

I thought when i chose a book that was a favorite of Audible readers it would be a great read. It is a sappy and predictable romance novel. The plot is weak and the story so contrived it felt lime a 12th grader wrote it. It is perfect for all the bored wimen who want to read a twelve-page sex scene and dont need their brains to follow a story. I kept listening hoping it would go somewhere, but even the story lines were tied up into pretty and unbelievable bows. Ugh! Never again!

Fast and Not So Furious...

I bought this because of the high praise and what seemed like a different story line.
The book summary reads as:
"Haunted by nightmares of her father's street murder 15 years ago, Kat Lane decides to face her fears and uphold his legacy of helping others by teaching inmates at a New York prison. Some of the negative reviews of this book are true. It feels predictable. The main characters are a little juvenile.
However, all of that doesn't discount this is a very unique love story. I thought that the relationship between Wes and Kat was well written and I was definitely invested in seeing how things would work for them.
Wes had a very tragic childhood. Kat's childhood is also punctuated by the violent and traumatic loss of her father. Their lives intersect as children when Wes performs an extraordinary act of courage and save Kat's life. When their lives intersect more than a decade later, their attraction is immediate. There is a feeling of inevitability about them- and this is where I calling the story predictable is wrong. Rather than being predictable, I see the author as having crafted a story where it is obvious that the characters are experiencing the kind of attraction that is more than just physical. Their souls see each other and there is an immediate recognition of their mate. I know that sounds a bit fantastic, but this is a real love story. It is full of angst and frustration, but also lots of passion. I like their balls to the wall, at all costs desire to be with each other.

Most romance novels are predictable. Most readers of romance novels expect them have a HEA. It's what lets us endure big misunderstandings, separations and seemingly insurmountable obstacles between the protagonists. In my opinion, the mark of a good writer is one who creates, tension and uncertainty for the reader who knows it is all going to end well. This book does that. So, yes- this story lets you figure out where this is going. But, I still had moments of worry and confusion during this story.
I enjoyed it. I have bought the sequel novella and excited to see them navigate their issues with Kat's family and friends.

Juvenile, predictable and not enjoyable

Sounded like a good premise but falls way short. Probably good for a teenager but a disappointment for me and a credit not well spent.

Not My Style

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

If you enjoy romance, a bit of suspense, and lots of sappy man meets girl and bedroom sex, this is the book for you.

Has A Pound of Flesh turned you off from other books in this genre?

Yes!

What about Grace Grant’s performance did you like?

She was excellant. I liked her voice for this book.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from A Pound of Flesh?

Most of the scenes. I would have left out the corny stuff and put in a good, complicated story line.

Any additional comments?

There needs to be a category for books with little plot and lots of thoughts about romance and sex.

Too Much Angst.....

Page after page of angst with a romance thrown in. There should be a separate genre for 'Romantic Angst'. Then I could avoid these books and not waste my time listening to a story which I keep hoping will become more interesting and less whiny. This is probably a decent story and just not to my taste. No more angst for me please.

Worth the weight

This is a GREAT read. Don't judge the book by the lackluster cover or terrible non-romantic title. I enjoyed every minute of this book and look forward to more from this author.

Wow

Perfect example of New Adult with a twist. Very original for this genre. Loved these characters and their journey.

if there were more stars I would give them!

This book is captivating, literally laughed, felt emotions for the characters and I couldn't stop listening. Typically, try to pace my books so as not to listen to a book a day...this was very difficult with this one. Was only able to stretch it out to 3 days!

Slightly disappointing

There was far too much time spent convincing the audience that the main characters were really really really really in love. We believed it by chapter five! The book would have been much better, had some of that time been spent developing a plot with some depth. The only reason I kept reading was because I paid for the book.
