Summary

Pulling together all the threads that he weaved so expertly throughout the previous six stories, this is the last portion of Jeffrey Archer's enthralling series about the lives and loves of the Clifton family.

This Was a Man opens with a shot being fired, but who pulled the trigger, and who lives, and who dies?

In Whitehall, Giles Barrington discovers the truth about his wife, Karin, from the Cabinet Secretary. Is she a spy or a pawn in a larger game?

Harry Clifton sets out to write his magnum opus while his wife, Emma, completes her 10 years as Chairman of the Bristol Royal Infirmary and receives an unexpected call from Margaret Thatcher offering her a job.

Sebastian Clifton becomes chairman of Farthings Kaufman bank, but only after Hakim Bishara has to resign for personal reasons. Sebastian and Samantha's talented daughter, Jessica, is expelled from the Slade School of Fine Art, but her aunt Grace comes to her rescue.

Meanwhile, Lady Virginia is about to flee the country to avoid her creditors when the Duchess of Hertford dies, and she sees another opportunity to clear her debts and finally trump the Cliftons and Barringtons.

In a devastating twist, tragedy engulfs the Clifton family when one of them receives a shocking diagnosis that will throw all their lives into turmoil.

This Was a Man is the captivating final instalment of the Clifton Chronicles, a series of seven novels that has topped the bestseller lists around the world and enhanced Jeffrey Archer's reputation as a master storyteller.

The end of a great series

While I am a fan of Jeffrey Archer and this series certainly lives up to his other esteemed works, I did find it somewhat annoying the amount of shameless book plugs he managed to fit in. As a casual reader they may go unnoticed but as I have read just about everything he wrote ( barring the Prison diaries-not his best work) they really stood out.
Overall the story was great and a good ending to the chronicles. The narration was generally good but it would have benefited from a female narration for the female parts as Jennings made them all sound the same, which was somewhat confusing.
Even so well worth the read.

a fitting end to this series

Any additional comments?

I have really enjoyed the whole series I will miss the advendtures of Harry and Emma, their family and all their arch enemies.

The last installment did not disapoint and for once no cliffhangers.

This was a very fitting ending to the clifton cronicles, and it actually made me want to start over and listened to the first one again

Fantastic book, as have been the last 6.

An excellent listen, superbly narrated. The story was equally gripping even though it was more contemporary for me than the others. I cried at the ending, which was so lovely.

What a series.

The novels in this series were the usual Jeffrey Archer page turners. Full of larger than life characters whose lives become interlinked. Having each novel read by Alex Jennings was also stunning and he almost became part of the saga. I am looking forward to what Jeffrey is next working on and hope it will be the same narrator.

Oh my goodness I am bereft!!!

I stumbled across the Clifton Chronicles book 1 as a free read from Audio, I have not had a book which pulled me in so deeply for a long time. I have laughed, cried, gasped and actually yelled noo out loud on a busy street due to these books and this final one left me sobbing in my kitchen. So glad I'd run out of books and credit and opted to try a free one but what on earth will come even remotely close to matching it?
