A man-eating journey of self-discovery
"Based on the promotional pitch for this new Audible Original—"Eat Pray Love meets American Psycho"—A Certain Hunger could have been written just for me. But so loud was the collective gasp in the room when the project was announced, it’s clear a lot of us were hungry for the story of a female cannibal on a self-actualizing voyage of homicidal hedonism. Chelsea G. Summers’s debut novel follows food writer Dorothy Daniels—the epicurean lovechild of Elizabeth Báthory and the vampire Lestat, if they were fluent in New York media and wrote Nabokovian prose—on a lascivious romp from the cocktail bars of Manhattan to the truffle-hiding hills of Italy. Somewhere along the way, she’s landed herself in prison; perhaps it has to do with her (literal) taste in men? Provocative and very funny, A Certain Hunger is narrated by veteran performer Hillary Huber—just the right icing for this bloody, decadent cake."

Delicious

Hilarious, dark, sexy, brilliant, joyful, amazing. Also the obvious relish of the voice actor was a huge bonus--so much more fun.

Darkly Compelling

I have a very, very vivid imagination. It's both a curse and blessing -- I often find books more compelling than movies because I can visualize them so deeply. Chelsea's work is visceral for me. If you like your murder and vivisection with a literary cadence (and a pro/antagonist you frankly sympathize with), this novel is totally your jam.

Excellent writer. Excellent narration.

Odd topic, but so are the books, movies, and tv show featuring Hannibal Lecter. Summers is an excellent writer who has created a character who is the feminine equal of Lecter. The difference between this story and the Lecter saga is that we find out more about what makes these weirdos tick than what Harris tells us. I understand why some might not like this story, but you cannot ignore the author's keen observations about human nature, sex, and the pretentious foodie movement. I loved the clever metaphors. True, it's not for everyone. I look forward to the author's next work. The narrator is superb

Fabulous

I loved the dark humor & raw honesty of Dorothy’s story. The narrator was Dorothy, she did a fabulous job. An interesting, entertaining & thought provoking read.

Very creepy and well worded

The story is very interesting and I liked it a lot. The characters feel very real. If you have a weak stomach might want to fast forward a few bits.

Pretty good, relies on shock

I read this one a while ago, so I'm basing my review on the lasting impression it made. This was an okay read. A fun protagonist/narrator, but a lot of the weight of the story is based on shock value rather than a compelling dive into motivations/trauma. Easy to read.

A weird, disturbing and compelling story

This is an incredible exploration of female rage, of a woman trying to leave a legacy and carve out a space of history for her.

Graphic, haunting and unputdownable
