Summary

The world is on the brink of apocalypse. Zero Day has come. The only thing more terrifying than millions of spiders is the realisation that those spiders work as one. But among the government, there is dissent: do we try to kill all of the spiders, or do we gamble on Professor Guyer's theory that we need to kill only the queens?

For President Stephanie Pilgrim, it's an easy answer. She's gone as far as she can - more than two dozen American cities hit with tactical nukes, the country torn asunder - and the only answer is to believe in Professor Guyer.

Unfortunately, Ben Broussard and the military men who follow him don't agree, and Pilgrim, Guyer, and the loyal members of the government have to flee, leaving the question: what's more dangerous, the spiders or ourselves?

Never Quite Lived up to its Promise

A missed opportunity. Ezekiel Boone came up with several good ideas for his post apocalyptic drama but as I wrote after the previous book it never quite fully developed and needed a big ending. Zero Day doesn't really cut it and the whole thing now feels like a missed opportunity.

The characters are given plenty of depth and colour but a far too high percentage of this concluding book was dedicated to that with internal monolog, side story dialog and too little story progression. The series needed either a lot more length so that the large cast of characters could fulfil story arcs satisfactorily or a reduction in the number of them.

Boone could be an author to look out for if he gets the balance right because there were some excellent ideas in this trilogy but they were simply never quite delivered fully.

Oh god what a hilariously bad ending

So, the narrator does a good job, he does. It's just ashame the story goes from mediocre to absolute garbage. Into the dumpster this trilogy goes and considering it was struggling to climb out of it, it's not a short fall for it.

very disappointing

There were so many characters that did nothing. 90% of the book was unnecessary filler. What was the point of the family in Scotland. They added nothing to the story.

The whole story built up to a real anti climax, then continued for what seemed forever adding more unnecessary detail.

The narration was good. The writing was good, but this should have been one book. A real shame.

Great ending to a fine trilogy

Zero Day keeps up the tension as we follow the characters established in Skitter and the Hatching. Well read and well paced.

Good but anti-climactic.

Overall well written and presented as per the previous two books. Unfortunately I found the grand finale to be anti-climactic and cliché. It seemed to end quite abruptly and easily after three books of build up, but thats just a personal opinion.

Thrilling!

Loved this series. Lends itself to becoming a serialization for tv. Enjoyed the intertwined stories and cared about the characters. I felt the excitement and look forward to waiting a while, buying the books and enjoying all over again.

Back on track

Loved the first in the series, the mythology of nazca lines, good characters, well narrated etc. but felt the second was just a bridging instalment - not too much character development or more added to the storyline really, just more of the same; but I have to admit this finale did round it off well.

Not a 'horror' series in my eyes, falls into the trap of very samey descriptions (not much you can do with some spiders here, there & everywhere) but fun and entertaining nonetheless. And that's what you want sometimes. Very enjoyable overall.

Nowhere near as good as the first 2 'books'

Nowhere near as good as the first 2 'books', but why?
Did this author run out of creative steam?

Felt like the writer was in a rush to conclude all the plots

I was really looking forward to this third book in the series, but the book has the feel that the writer was in a rush to conclude all of the different plot lines which spoiled it for me. I’m not saying that the book is not worth listening to I’m just feel that it was glossing over too much of the Interwoven plots to feel smoothly written.

Light Conclusion to a Promising Trilogy

Would you try another book written by Ezekiel Boone or narrated by George Newbern?

While the author showed great promise with the first two books, this one unfortunately never lived up to the promise. I suspect that the success of the first two meant that this one had less preparation and did feel a bit lacking in depth, so some interesting storylines were never really developed, and the ending did come across as a bit rushed.

However the first two are really great and have done enough to make up for deficiencies with the ending, so would still recommend listening to the trilogy.
