Myths from a singular taleteller

If you could sum up Tales of Erana in three words, what would they be?

Lyrical, compelling, sensual

Who was your favorite character and why?

My favorite character is hard to choose, since each story has its own inventive soul. In The Tale of Treyna the Beloved, a mortal woman is pursued by two rival gods under heavens full of magic.I loved the tale of a lonely magician who finds a companion in the storm -- and pays a high price. In The Blue Phial, a magician makes an awful error... If I must choose a favorite, it's The Legend of Oeliana: I love the nymph. And if I tell you about the toad, I'll ruin this elegant tale of jealousy and debt.

Which character – as performed by Michael Legate – was your favorite?

Oeliana and Treyna come unforgettably to life in the narration by Michael Legate. The author has chosen a fit narrator to bring her wonders to your ear.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I found this collection of tales more than diverting. The combination of a visionary writer and sensitive narrator made me sad when the book was done and I had to leave the world of Erana, and longing for more.

Any additional comments?

Alexandra Butcher is an unusual writer, subtle and evocative. Her tales always leave me lonely for her world, where women and men and trolls and elves lead lives uniquely imagined; the narration brought the story to life, sometimes with unexpected nuances. Read Butcher, if you have a taste for wonder and lyrically imagined worlds.

Background Stories for the World of Erana

Where does Tales of Erana rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

It ranks in the solid middle. That may be because romance elements are not my thing.

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

Liked: I think the narrator had good pacing and appropriate voice.
Disliked: There were several instances where there were voice overlays, or a second or two where two voices were speaking. Also a few places where there were overly long pauses.

Any additional comments?

A cross between stories being told and mythical lessons, giving some of the history and background for the Land of Erana.

I enjoyed the descriptions and language (word choice) used by the author.
