Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

Two small towns in Colorado: Hope and Despair. Between them, nothing but twelve miles of empty road. Jack Reacher can't find a ride, so he walks. All he wants is a cup of coffee. What he gets are four redneck deputies who want to run him out of town.

Mistake. They're picking on the wrong guy. Jack Reacher is a big man, and he's in shape. No job, no address, no baggage. Nothing, except bloody-minded curiosity. What is the secret the locals seem so keen to hide?

A hard man is good to find. Ex-military cop Reacher is today's most addictive hero. Now he pulls on a tiny loose thread, to unravel conspiracies that expose the most shocking truths. Because, after all, Jack Reacher has nothing to lose.

_________

Although the Jack Reacher novels can be listened to in any order, Nothing To Lose is 12th in the series.

Reacher ... a magnet for trouble

Oh Reacher Reacher when will you learn to keep your 6' 5" frome out of trouble. If Lee Child's creation did then we would robbed of a dusty, eccentric, travelling rough neck with the moral code of the Lone Ranger wedded to the chivalry of a medieval knight. This strory saunters along gathering dust and trouble. None of the trouble is of Reachers making of course though in the breaking of a few arms and heads he is more than able to find solutions.
Without the voice of Jeff Harding ... who in my mind is THE Reacher ... the vision would not be complete. Jeff Hardings voice is 6' 5"" tall and what a fine story he tells.

Not up to Lee Child's usual high standard

I have listened to every book up to this point in the order they were written, which I highly recommend, some people have said you don't have to read or listen to them in order but you do miss out on the overall development of the Jack Reacher character and how he adapts to changes in technology over the years, as well as the experiences he has and there are many references to previous stories in his books which although do not impact on the story add to the enjoyment when you are 'in the know'.

Jeff Harding is Jack Reacher, I have never been disappointed with his performances, he is excellent, his female voices might be a little samey but overall his is superb, by far the best narrator out of those who have also done previous books.

The story.. don't worry no spoilers

Regretfully I have to say this is by far the least interesting story of the first 12 books, up to now every book without fail has been a thrilling ride, unfortunately this one just wasn't.
It got to the point where I was actually not listening to the book, there was just far too much superfluous descriptive prose which I personally felt were only in there to try and bulk out a lacklustre story, I just didn't feel engaged with Jack and his curiosity to get to the truth, I felt disinterested in the plot and the characters involved.

Don't get me wrong, there are great scenes in the book where Reacher dishes out his usual form of justice, not least the scene with the orderly, it is just epic but it wasn't enough. Even the ending was a disappointment, I have told myself when I get to the last book I will start again from the first book but I have to say this one will get missed out.

Hoping Jack Reacher 13 is Lee Child back on form.

Bit pedestrian and fanciful tale

Would you listen to Nothing to Lose again? Why?

Wouldn't listen again as unlike the other Reacher novels it has poor character development , little emotional connection and fanciful story.

What will your next listen be?

Simon Kernick - Stay alive

Have you listened to any of Jeff Harding’s other performances? How does this one compare?

Good performance by jeff harding but struggles to work with poor material.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

No part of the book really engaged me emotionally and the whole experience left an insubstantial feeling.

Any additional comments?

After listening to all the reacher novels so far this has made me want to take a long wait before trying book 13.

Excellent, Fast-paced Thriller

Lee Child's character Jack Reacher is a fantastically controversial hero - a man who lives by his own rules and considers that results always justify the means. Throughout the series he wanders the US with a random freedom bordering on an obsession to be hidden from the world - anonymous in the crowd. Wherever he encounters wrongs he puts them to rights in his own direct and ruthless way - often trespassing on the law, his results always land on the right side of justice.

In Nothing to Lose, Reachers wanders into a town called Despair in the state of Colorado - and is promptly arrested by the town deputies for violating the Vagrancy Ordinance. He is ejected back to the town he had come from, Hope where he is met by his soon-to-be reluctant ally, a police officer named Vaughn.

Reacher's stubborn curiosity carries him back into despair and together is Vaughn he uncovers a conspiracy that involves the whole town, being carried out by the unbalanced sectarian owner of the metal recycling plant that provides business and revenue for the entire town of Despair.

Through the character of Reacher, the author injects interesting views of military duty and desertion, of the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan and the Army as an institution.

All in all a very enjoyable, fast paced thriller with a good mix of dry humour and action. It fully deserves the 5 star rating I have given it and it is well read by Jeff Harding.

Excellent

Really enjoying the Jack Reacher novels and this one I couldn't stop listening to, the storyline really draws you in, this is the 12th Jack Reacher book and they just keep getting better. Again Jeff Harding does an excellent job of narrating the story, looking forward to the next one!

Most boring Reacher book I have listened to so far

Least favourite so far. I am pleased I listened to the Reacher books in order because if I had listened to this first, I wouldn't have bothered with others. Boring and repetitive story
