Summary

At the end of a long, dark night Detectives Renée Ballard and Harry Bosch cross paths for the very first time.

Detective Renée Ballard is working the graveyard shift again and returns to Hollywood Station in the early hours only to find that an older man has snuck in and is rifling through old file cabinets. The intruder is none other than legendary LAPD detective Harry Bosch, working a cold case that has gotten under his skin.

Ballard kicks him out, but eventually Bosch persuades her to help, and she relents. Bosch is investigating the death of 15-year-old Daisy Clayton, a runaway who was brutally murdered. He crossed paths with her devastated mother while working a previous case, and Daisy's story has seized hold of him.

If you’re a life long fan, you’ll welcome Renee

A fantastic addition to the repertoire. Wasn’t sure on book one but after this book, I’m convinced. Her back story is good. The relation with Bosch works well. I’m glad she’s there. It’s a really nice change. I didn’t enjoy Jack McAvoy or Terry McCaleb. Renee is cool, clever and probably just as damaged as Bosch.

I really like the way they split the book between the two narrators (although I’m not a massive fan of Titus welliver) but I do like the Christine larkins bosch. He’s really cool. She makes him sound as I would imagine Harry to be. Old. Not bothered and as laid back as a deck chair). Christine plays a very good Renee Ballard. I’m sold on her myself.

Great story. Great performance. Really enjoyed it.

Compelling amalgam of a pair of great characters:

Two great characters united by their damage. A very compelling read and an entertaining twist on a relatively typical procedural. Good plotting and excellent performances - a must have for Bosch fans old and new.

A New Dynamic Duo

This is a very good LAPD detective novel interleaved with a Harry Bosch story that becomes both a cop buddy novel and the development of a new partnership that will see Detective Renee Ballard ascend as Harry Bosch declines due to age and eventual infirmity (if not violent death). Much as I would love to see Harry go on forever, after all he is one of the greats and Titus Welliver totally owns the character, I can see how that would strain credulity in a series known for its authenticity. Ballard is also a good female foil for Bosch in the absence of his wife and daughter so I appreciate the logic and look forward to more from these new caped crusaders of the Late Show.

2nd tier

Fabulous narration from both readers, but the story wasn’t as compelling as a number of Bosch books….. a tad “bits and pieces”.

Not one of his best

I wasn't so impressed by this book, Bosch seems to have lost his sparkle. I like Ballard and I think that maybe in future books they will be better together.

I didn't like the narration, there didn't see any point in changing from male to female narrators, I found this distracting, also distracting and uneccessary was the loud music at the beginning of the book!

Very disappointed

I love Michael Connolly, but the dual narrative didn't work for me. I returned the book because I couldn't handle Christine Lakin's voice, the accents were inconsistent and laughable. This is Harry Bosch, you can't use a female to read his lines. It made him sound quite wimpy.

most enjoyable

The author has Bosch ageing steadily but still doggedly fighting the good fight supported by the next generation

Excellent Performance by Titus Welliver

Thoroughly enjoyed the story line.
Once again Mr Welliver excelled. It's about time he re recorded all the earlier Bosch audible books..
