Publisher's summary

Catherine Tilney had settled in for a quiet, respectable, distinctly non-Gothic English life in the countryside with her husband, the Reverend Henry Tilney. Unfortunately, a quiet, respectable, distinctly non-Gothic life had not settled itself for her. An original sequel to Jane Austen's Northanger Abbey, Nachtstürm Castle whisks the reader and its heroine away to the border countries in the Austrian Alps, where adventure, mistaken identities, lost heirs, and terrifying butlers lurk.

Austen Fans Rejoice. Perfect Sequel to N. Abbey.

I am a huge Jane Austen fan. I have read all of her books multiple times. Northanger Abbey has one of the best male characters that Austen writes. This book is a perfect sequel to Northanger Abbey. It is written in the same style with similar humor and remains faithful to the characters. Allow me to give you some quotes to illustrate, "Alas, if an author is allowed two alases in a chapter." "This is the shortest chapter containing only 144 words." The tongue-in-cheek style continues throughout the book. It is simply delightful.

The plot in this book is more substantial than in the original Northanger Abbey. Henry takes his bride to a real Gothic castle for a belated honeymoon. Spoofing the original satire, Catherine believes that Henry has arranged for all the terror they encounter so she does not believe that she is really in danger. This makes for both some genuinely eerie and genuinely humorous scenes. The couple must solve the mysteries that the castle contains. Who is this woman that looks exactly like Catherine? What is the curse that seems to afflict all the former barons? The story is suspenseful, intriguing, and funny. The narrator does an excellent job of performing the characters and setting the mood. I will check out all the books of both the author and the narrator. Well done. I was given this free review copy of this audio-book at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Fun Gothic Adventure

Not sure what to expect, I was pleasantly surprised by this gothic tale. I liked the "story within a story" aspect and the author's personal notes. Catherine was such an amusing character and I chuckled every time that she thought it was all just an elaborate setup, perpetrated by her husband. The carriage scene was hilarious! The characters and setting, along with the great plot, added to my enjoyment. The narrator was wonderful and brought the story to life. I thoroughly enjoyed Nachsturm Castle and would recommend it.

not for me but not bad either

I was gifted this book in audio format in order to write an honest review.

I DNF'd it. The book started off strong, it was a bit slow but once i got into it- the story was engaging. (it is a bit over 5 hours long in audio) with about 2 hours left something happened- i don't know what and then i was just confused. i tried to rewind, figure out what was going on but there were characters that i didn't remember hearing before and i was just totally lost. i had to stop.

i think if you are a huge austin fan- and in particular a fan of Northanger abbey (which i thought i was but i guess not) you might do better with this than i did. it has a very JA feel to it. it is well written, clean, just not for me.

the narration is super great. great pace and inflection. the narrator is top notch.

would i try another book by this author- sure- i'm just not a gothic fan i think- though i was enjoying the mystery until i got lost- would i listen to this narrator again- definitely!

Fun Creepy Gothic Austin Sequel

I love all the Jane Austen books but have to admit it has been a while since I've read Northanger Abbey. This is a sequel to that story. It started a tad slow and then quickly hit all levels of creepiness for me. Little tip don't read it late at night like I did.... that was a bit mistake for me, it took me forever to go to sleep. However, I am a bit of a wimp when it comes to horror or scary movies and books - I tend to avoid them. This wasn't in the horror genre but definitely in the creepy ghost haunting, thriller, and mystery genre. The narrator does a great job and overall I thought it was a fun daytime read. 😉 Give this one a try it you like the Jane Austen spin off books.

humor?

The synopsis is incorrect. There is little or no humor. Simply a parody the style of the times. No surprises makes for dry reading.

I was giggling within 10 minutes

So I've heard it said that Henry and Catherine are woefully underappreciated as an Austen couple, compared to all the Pride and Prejudice variations and sequels. This work has me agreeing wholeheartedly and wishing more people wrote about them.

Finally, Catherine gets a proper gothic adventure. A castle with a mysterious backstory that unspools before us as the narration progresses, at one point in an entertainingly direct manner. The story starts light and humorous, but it soon gets genuinely spooky as the mystery heats up. I fear saying anymore lest I spoil the ride.

The writing does a good job of paying homage to Jane's style, while standing quite well on its own. And the narrator was fantastic. She was wry when the writing was witty and playful, breathless rapturous when describing gothic landscapes, and ominous as the story took a turn for the darker.

I received a free copy for a honest review, and I'm happy to say this would have been worth paying for.

Entertaining Enough

The story was interesting enough but i was not a fan of how it broke away in the middle to a backstory in the middle of an action scene. I loved the performance though!

A Story Within a Story

This book was given to me for free at my request and I provided this voluntary review.

This book is a little unusual as the writer herself points out. Right when this ghostly tale reaches its apex, the storyline is interrupted to recount the moment in a faraway past when the "course" hanging over the castle was cast. I'm not sure that was the best decision however. I would have probably enjoyed it more if the background story was given at the beginning. Somehow I don't think it obtained the sought-after effect.
It is a gothic tale for sure and the characters are pleasant enough. You won't be disappointed if you are in search of ghosts, secret passages, evil presences, and the victory of good over evil. It's all there and the author uses her great writing skills to make it a pleasant experience. The narration was also well done. All in all a pleasant audiobook to listen to.

Not what I expected

I found this slow going to begin with. I was looking forward to reading it because I love anything Jane Austen even adaptation.

But this one is not for me but others might like it. I just found it slow and confusing in a certain area.
