A man is walking down a country lane. A woman, cycling towards him, swerves to avoid a dog. On that moment their future hinges. There are three possible outcomes, three small decisions that could determine the rest of their lives.
Eva and Jim are 19 and students at Cambridge when their paths first cross in 1958. And then there is David, Eva's then lover, an ambitious actor who loves Eva deeply. The Versions of Us follows the three different courses their lives could take following this first meeting. Lives filled with love, betrayal, ambition, but through it all is a deep connection that endures whatever fate might throw at them.
The Versions of Us explores the idea that there are moments when our lives might have turned out differently, the tiny factors or decisions that could determine our fate, and the precarious nature of the foundations upon which we build our lives. It is also a story about the nature of love and how it grows, changes and evolves as we go through the vagaries of life.

Amazing!
I agree with many reviews that this book can be hard to follow but it is soooo worth sticking with it. An amazing story, not many books have me in tears. I listened to it every spare minute I had - hugely recommended!

Fabulous but takes a bit of concentration to keep up
This book is a fabulous read or listen.
So cleverly intertwined are all the stories/versions it's hard to tell them apart.
Sometimes you wish you could pick your own versions especially at the end
Highly highly Recommend

Just wanted it to end!
Actually, it really wasn't that bad but the 3 versions just went on and on and on to the bitter end...literally! There was no room left to use your own interpretations or imagination. It kept me reading and I liked the characters but between the 3 versions and the time jumps I got very confused.

Enjoyable & well read
There are a few books out like this - it's similar to the first 15 lives of Harry August and also Life after Life , but with a twist.
I enjoyed the idea of showing how taking a different path here or there would effect the relationships of a group of people and it is executed well.

Needs concentration.
If you could sum up The Versions of Us in three words, what would they be?
Poignant, confusing, melancholy.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Ava, seemed to remain an inherently good and fair character in each version of events, although a little wet and weak at times.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No, I needed regular breaks to process the different versions and figure out the history of that version.
Any additional comments?
I liked the premise of intertwined lives and how a chance meeting can change the path of someone's life, it just became a little confusing and yet predictable in places.

It is a lovely book. Very well constructed. I was hooked on listening to it. And yes, it needs some concentration but that should not be a greater challenge. Beautifully read.
